4.0 out of 5 stars Feeling Brave, 14 April 2012
This review is from: Alone At Last (Audio CD)
Some of the worst crimes against humanity have involved jazz and poetry mixed together. But this combination of Tommy Smith and musical friends and the poet Edwin Morgan actually works. The poetry blends well into the music and is mostly of good content and fun. Tommy is on great form and mixes jazz, some standards but also world music put through his very own, and very special, viewpoint. If you are feeling adventurous, and looking for something a little different, give this a listen. I doubt you will be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mmmmm.....as Bob said., 18 Sep 2010
This feels like two ends of a very long spectrum - the wonder of the music and the banality of the stage chat. The music wins out every time - a thing of beauty and wonderful "feel". Some caution needed - most mothers would not like it but those with broad musical taste (and a robust approach to very dodgy comments on ethnicity) are gonna dig this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, 11 April 2009
Now this really is a find. Great sound quality linked to a great set list. This dates from the 1977 tour, which was a classic in it's own right. But even by those standards this is a great show. Buy it now -you do need this!

I've been looking forward to this for a long time and it does not disappoint. I've always enjoyed Phil Howard's contribution to "5" and I saw this line-up at Colston Hall in'71. This is an aggressive, angular band with plenty of swagger. You can see why Hugh and Mike felt threatened and why Elton loved it so. This CD could warm the coldest room in record time. A classic!

3.0 out of 5 stars Set for dancing?, 30 Mar 2008

A bit of a mixed bag this one. Some great tracks (How Many Times, The Hiring Fair, Head in a Sack) but one or two wooden ones (and a frankly poor instrumental medly). The bonus tracks do not add a great deal being from very different periods/line-ups. But with FC its always a bit of a bumpy journey - that's why we love them so - and this one's not bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars All White, 27 Jan 2008

Perhaps my favourite album from the Softs - which is surprising in the light of the semi-chaos experienced after Robert Wyatt was asked to leave them (with Phil Howard being swiftly ousted by Mike Ratledge and Hugh Hopper, leading to Elton Dean's departure from the band). Phil's drumming has always struck me as being very good on this album and Elton is on splendid form. Lesser known tracks such as MC and Bone add to the overall quality of this album while As If is one of the best things they ever did. Great stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, 9 Dec 2007
This is magical - when I lose my way in music I always return to JS Bach to get my bearings, and Julia's approach to these pieces is about as good as it gets.

I'm a bit of a sucker for Fred, and I think this one of his best. It sets a pretty constant, reflective, mood but it's a grower. Let those worries go and drift on down the stream....

This is not easy music - not too many tapping feet. But it does feature three blokes pretty much at the top of their game. So, if you want to invest some of your time, here/hear are three musicians willing to take you on an adventure....
