4.0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Breath of Fresh Air!, 13 April 2012
This review is from: The Howling Reborn [DVD] (DVD)
The Howling series has gotten a lot of flack over the years, and rightly so. Following the Joe Dante's original werewolf classic, a whole slurry of sequels were made, none of which even remotely living up to anything half as good as the original - and they were getting progressivly worse. Now after 15+ years since the last sequel a new Howling has come out. When I first heard this news, I did what every horror fan did, rolled their eyes and expected the worst - another sequel!

BUT after watching it I actually really really enjoyed it! It takes a whole new approach to the series (so there's no need to have seen any of the previous installments). A mix between SCREAM and THE HOWLING, this is without doubt the second best film in the franchise, just second to the undeniable classic. Whilst it's comparison to TWILIGHT may put some of the more gore-hungry horror fans off, don't let it! Although there are TWILIGHT elements present such as werewolves, romance and a topless guy (the very fetching Landon Liboiron) to satisfy those fans, there's much much more on offer here. From the werewolf-know-it-all a la SCREAM, sexy werewolf women and a fresh new story that really draws you in and keeps you captivated right up to the action-packed ending, it's got lots here to please hardcore horror fans as well as those just getting into horror.

If you like horror films with plenty of teens running around, fearing for their lives like URBAN LEGEND, SCREAM, HALLOWEEN and countless others with a werewolf twist, then I would highly recommened this film! It's surprisingly the best werewolf film of recent years with some rather nice touches. The werewolves look incredible in this and there's plenty of them especially in the second half.

I'd give it a 7/10. A must see for all werewolf fans, HOWLING fans and horror fans (both old and new).

5.0 out of 5 stars Drugs, Murder and Puppies., 9 Mar. 2012
The 12th volume of the classic Australian Prison series is here and the show just keeps on getting better!

Across 8 discs, a total of over 30 episodes are included here. The dramatic storylines are piled on keeping you firmly glued to the TV set. Bea Smith makes a dash for freedom, Nola gets her come-upance,The Freak gets a very cute puppy, there's spooky goings on in the Prisoner and a new governor is appointed.

Also included on this set is a series of interviews from Amanda Muggleton (who played Chrissie Latham). This is really a nice addition to an already fantastic box set as she talks about her favourite Top Dogs, the funniest moments on set, the other actresses and so much more.

I highly, highly recommened this! The show just keeps on giving with so many brilliant storylines (and some rather bizarre ones too!) and such talented actors/actresses it's not hard to see how this show has such a large and dedicated following.

10/10! Can't wait for the next volume.

5.0 out of 5 stars And so it begins..., 6 Mar. 2012
The show that kicked off Johnny Depp's incredible career stars here with this fantastic DVD. Staring Depp as Tom Hanson, for those unfamiliar with the show, 21 JUMP STREET follows several undercover cops trying to catch out criminals in the act. It's a hell of a lot of fun with some of the greatest episodes in the show in this first series. The storylines will keep you hooked and guesssing to the end with some great tension of plenty of laughs a long the way. Johnny Depp is on top form here and you can already start to see the quirkiness he is now known for.

If you love 80's TV, looking for a great cult television box set to make your way through or are a Johnny Depp fan then this is perfect for you! Also included here are the two pilot episodes which is obviously a nice addition.

Highly, highly recommended! This is easily one of the greatest shows of the 80s and is still up there with the best of whats on TV today.

10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Burn, Baby Burn!, 3 Feb. 2012
It's back!

The 11th Volume of Prisoner: Cell Block H is here and what a cracker it is! Crammed and stuffed with over 30 fantastic episodes, this set showcases one of the best phases in Cell Block H history. One word: fire! Yes, this is the set that contains the infamous burning of Wentworth that is not only one of the most rememebered episodes amongst the Prisoner fanbase, but a key moment in television history. Incredible, simply incredible.

With so many great story lines, thrilling drama, great comedy relief and those wobbly sets what more could you possibly want?

A very nice looking box set that, along with all the previous 10 sets, looks superb on my shelf!

Highly recommended to all fans of Prisoner and those new to the show looking for a place to get stuck in.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best dragon films around., 30 Jan. 2012
A fire-breathing dragon is quite possibly one of the coolest creatures to have stared in film, but despite the beast's awesomeness there are only a handful of Dragon movies that are any good. Thankfully DAWN OF THE DRAGON SLAYER comes to the rescue and really delivers the goods!

The films tells the story of Will, a guy setting out to avenge a fire-breathing, flying dragon after killing his father. There's a love story in here too and plenty of human drama to really flesh the film out and give it a lot more substance. This allows the film's plot to be much more heavier and a lot more interesting.

DAWN OF THE DRAGON SLAYER features a rather new and unknown cast and crew, but don't be fooled into thinking that's a bad thing. Far from it! The performances in this film are all top-notch and brilliantly acted. Perhaps the star of the film is Ian Cullen (from Z CARS, F and DOCTOR WHO), but I thought that Richard McWilliams did a fantastic job as the lead alongside Nicola Posener despite it being his first film role. I can see him going far and making a big name for himself if this is anything to go by!

The special effects in a film can often make or break a film of this nature, and is the line in which awesomeness and utter crap come together. However, the CGI in DAWN OF THE DRAGONSLAYER is excellent! The dragon's design is brilliantly terrifying and all in all it looks very convincing indeed - definetly a good thing!

Overall, this film is easily one of the best Dragon films out there. If you're a fan of such films as THE LORD OF THE RINGS, REIGN OF FIRE or the TV show MERLIN, or just think Dragon's are pretty damn cool, then you will absolutly love this film. I did!

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Forgotten Masterpiece, 29 Jan. 2012
There are few who would argue Dario Argento's influence and key role in cinema (espcially Italian Cinema)with his importance to the giallo genre and such classic films as SUSPIRIA and TENEBRAE. However, despite his much loved filmography, FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET has not been treated kind by time and for a lengthy period was even thought to be lost. But thanks to Shameless, this film is now available in glorious high definition - looking and sounding better than it has ever done before.

Completing Argento's notorious 'Animal' trilogy of films, FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET will keep you hooked to the set and hanging on the edge of your seat. The plot is one of the strongest in giallo cinema and has plenty of red herrings and one hell of a twist ending! See if you can work it out - I'm sure you wont. Acting is top-notch, the music by Ennio Moriconne is superb and Argento's direction is at it's peek. This truly is a marvelous film.

The Shameless Blu-Ray (and DVD) comes with plenty of extras from reversible artwork and an incredible audio.

I highly recommened this release to all Argento fans and those who enjoy cult cinema. Don't miss it!

Red Scorpion [Blu-ray][Region Free]

4.0 out of 5 stars Dolph At His Best, 24 Jan. 2012
The 1980s was one of the best decades for the Action genre. Sly and Arnie were at the top of their game and action films were being spewed out constantly throughout the years. RED SCORPION is quite easily one of the best examples of 80s war-action and remains a very fun and enjoyable watch today.

Dolph Lundgren stars as Lt. Nikolai Rachenko and does a fantastic job at it too. With huge muscles and a silly haircut, Dolphy is the quintessentional 80s action hero here. Perhaps best known for his roles in ROCKY IV, A VIEW TO A KILL, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, THE PUNISHER and THE EXPENDABLES, Lungren puts in a brilliant performance here that matches his best known work. Also staring in this explosive actioner are such great talent as M. Emmet Walsh (from BLADE RUNNER and THE WILD, WILD WEST), Al White from BACK TO THE FUTURE II and the AIRPLANE films and the incredible Carmen Argenziano (THE GODFATHER: PART II and SWORDFISH). All of whom are directed superbly by the director of FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER (my personal favorite FRIDAY film) and Chuck Norris' greatest INVASION USA. With a cast and crew like that, you know this film is going to be good!

There's hand-to-hand-combat, gun-fire, huge explosions, crazy stunts, exploding trucks, a high body count and flame throwers. Any film with a flame-thrower in immedietly gets the stamp of 'awesomeness'!

This film has never looked better since it's original release than it does on this Arrow Blu-Ray. Included in this package are four very cool artwork panels, a poster, a booklet dedicated to the film, great interviews and plenty more!

If you're an action fan then this is a MUST HAVE!

All hail the Lungren!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exploding Hookers!, 10 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Frankenhooker [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Exploding super-crack-addicted hookers, an out of control killer lawn mower, a morbid crazed
recluse, a floating brain with one eye... what more could a cult film fan ask for?!

The basic premise of this film revolves around the classic tale of Frankenstein, but with one major difference; Frank Henenlotter is behind the camera! Living up to the standards of his other masterpieces, Brain Damage and Basket Case, Frankenhooker is totally insane, filled with flying limbs, boob-selecting and the zaniest Frankenstein creation you'll ever see. The acting is top notch (especially from the underappreciated James Lorinz who stole Street Trash despite having only a small role). The comedy, quotable lines and gore comes thick and fast in this off-the-wall movie.

Arrow's Blu-Ray release of this film is simply incredible with its four artwork panels, poster, exclusive booklet and wealth of special features. This version is without a shadow of a doubt, the best release of this film so far.

I would highly recommend this to all fans of cult cinema or those looking for something slightly different for a fun night in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Craving some Craven? This is ideal!, 21 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Deadly Blessing [DVD] (DVD)
Wes Craven is easily one of the greatest directors in all of horror cinema. Creating such incredible films as THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, THE HILLS HAVE EYES, SCREAM and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET its easy to forget about his lesser known gems and DEADLY BLESSING is among his best.

DEADLY BLESSING tells the story of an Amish community who are not as harmless as they first appear. The cast is top-notch (with Michael Berryman being my favourite of the bunch) as is the directing. For all you Craven buffs here, you'll be able to spot the many ideas and scenes that would later appear in the infamous A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

Overall, this is easily one of the best Craven films out there and is a must for all horror fans. It's amongst the best of relgious horror films such as THE EXORCIST, THE OMEN and CHILDREN OF THE CORN.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say Hello To My Huge Flamethrower!, 19 Nov. 2011
Arrow have done it again! Their latest release is the incredible 80's vigilante film, THE EXTERMINATOR and it's all packaged in a very cool set, complete with booklet, 4 reversible artworks, a poster and some very nice special features. The film itself is easily the best of its kind, knocking DEATH WISH of the top spot for vigilante films. The directing is superb, the acting is top-notch and the story is excellent!

For any fans of Cult cinema this is a must buy. For any fans of exploitation movies this is a must buy. For any fans of bad-ass films this is a must buy. For any one with an ouch of awesomeness this is a must buy!
