5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful treasure of love, 8 Oct 2013

As a student of Tibetan Buddhism, my spiritual inspiration and studies are generally within this tradition, yet i noticed Rhonda Byrne's "The Power" while browsing in a bookstore on Oxford street one afternoon, and for some reason decided to flip through the pages. (as we all know, there are no co-incidences, so guess this was exactly what i needed to see on that afternoon!) Rather to my surprise, i found myself absorbed by the loving wisdom which this book offers. There is something of the understanding expressed here which simply resonates as true. As with many realisations, Rhonda Byrne's mentioning that when we focus upon that which we love, it increases, whereas when focusing upon that which is negative, or we don't want, increases the likelihood of our encountering that, simply based upon where our attention in focused, seems somehow obvious in a way (yet one of those 'obvious' things which may have eluded us previously!) While perhaps not completely agreeing with all of what Ms Byrne writes, there seems a general sense of goodness to be found here, which gently guides and reminds the reader of our true nature ... which, beyond the masks and self images most of us have adopted by way of 'protection', seems to be in the nature of love. From a Buddhist point of view, our nature would be described as a union of loving kindness, compassion and wisdom ... yet hey! In a world so full of people fighting, hating, exploiting, and indulging in all sorts of power trips, surely any finger pointing (even in the general direction of) goodness and truth sems valuable; and a finger pointing toward the beautiful nature of love seems a great and precious contribution to our well being, and indeed the well being of the planet (the more we rest in the state of love, the less likely we would seem to exploit others or the planet's resources or animal population). Perhaps i would tend to feel a sense that maybe awakening our inner wisdom, so as to have the wisdom of knowing what is best (rather than what we may think we want or need), could also be emphasised; yet i don't want to be critical of this book, as it seems to have a really good heart; and maybe discovering love itself brings wisdom ... like finding a beautiful multi-faceted jewel, shining with many colours of the rainbow, and benefitting all who see, touch, remember or have contact or connection with it!

4.0 out of 5 stars A celebration of optimisim & love, 8 Oct 2013

This album holds some real musical treasures and jewels of the heart! While occasionally, as seems a tendency with the Moody Blues, dipping into a little bit self indulgent melancholy, there is much to uplift and inspire on this album. A celebration of optimism and love, the beauty of the human spirit, loving connections, and this magical universe, with some great songs! For lovers of romance and great quality, up beat and melodic music ... this may be one for you!

3.0 out of 5 stars hard rocking psychedelic blues, 8 Oct 2013

Having greatly enjoyed Hot Tuna's wonderful (though quite horribly named) "Phospherescent Rat" album, i was much looking forward to hearing more of their back catalogue. However, whereas the aforementioned album consists of beautiful, tuneful psychedelic tunes, this album, "Hoppkorv" is a far more heavy rock kind of situation. While some of the tunefulness, and inspiring lyrics of the previous record shine through occasionally, there aren't enough moments of heart and mind opening inspiration for this to be an album i would return to again and again. The musicianship is excellent, and there's an abundance of energy, yet lacking in the tuneful subtlety found in "Phospherescent Rat". This really simply reflects my personal taste, as i'm sure someone who likes and enjoys a harder rock kind of sound would find much to delight in with this album! By the way, if anyone knows why their previous LP, "Phospherescent Rat" was so named, i would love to know!

3.0 out of 5 stars seeking inspiration here & now, 8 Oct 2013

While familiar with America's "Horse With No Name", it was only during a recent plane journey to attend a Tibetan Buddhist retreat, in Upstate New York, that i heard more of their music, with the album "Back pages" being on the in-flight entertainment menu. Great tunes! Upon returning to the Uk, i explored samples of their catalogue (courtesy of Amazon's samples); yet difficult to really 'hear' these songs when presented with 50 second, or so, segments. The album "Here & Now" seemed a good choice, as it was relatively recent, and generally anything reminding us to be 'Here and Now' seems to deserve a moment of our attention! However ... even with such a title, reminding us to awaken into the present moment, the songs on this album, while certainly ok tunes, didn't really touch, move or inspire me. This is probably, however, more to do with personal taste than any lacking in the music itself, which seemed high quality song writing. A pleasant enough listen, yet not an album which inspires a wish to hear again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars magical love story ... lotus in a swamp!, 21 Feb 2013

Having greatly enjoyed "Shrek The Musical", at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane last year, this brought fond memories, and renewed enjoyment of this magical (Ogre's) love story! Although a little disappointing that, while stated to be the 'UK edition', this is actually a Broadway cast recording, which includes a couple of songs not in the Uk version, and excludes a couple which are ~ yet this said, this is a treat and a joy! The joyful good hearted quality of the story shines through the songs, and the cast convey the story wonderfully. For those who enjoyed the show, or who like a good love story about ogres, this is the cd for you! Highly recommended and hugely enjoyable!

The Mickey Hart Band's latest cd is wonderful, magical, and a joy to experience! This amazing fusion of melody, sound, rhythm, good heart and spiritual awareness transports, or opens, the listener (this listener anyway) into the heart of the present, touching upon insights into our nature and experience, beyond the surface layers of illusory appearances, as projected and experienced by these fantasy egos, which most of us seem to generally insist on identifying with! If you enjoyed Hart's "Mystery Box" cd, while the music here is a perhaps slightly less 'poppy', this cd would probably be a must! May this open the hearts and minds of listeners everywhere!!!
