A simple story written in such a powerful way it doesn't fail to impress. The beginning of WW11 through the disbelieving eyes of Rudy and Leisiel as Germany burns books and takes a nation back into the dark ages. But Leisiel's adopted father teaches her to read and takes her into another world away from the horror of war. But not far enough, it seems.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking read., 8 July 2014
An excellent crafted story with first class descriptions on life. This tale of a man's rise from despair to hope is at times sad and amusing. I found it an interesting read albeit a short story, and would look forward to a full length offering from this author.
A first time novel by a very good author, well done Davey Northcott.
I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars great entertainment, 18 Sep 2013

I would imagine it takes a great skill to write short stories and still manage to evoke the emotions of a full blown novel. Yet this is exactly what James Anderson achieves. Great writing, clear, precise and to the point keeps the reader wanting more. As I read I tried to second guess the outcome of each story and only managed to achieve one. Might I also add, a very neat lead up to this authors full length novels at the end. Well done Mr Anderson. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, 7 Sep 2013

Five stories, all different and absorbing were a joy to read as the author showcases her considerable talents for holding the readers attention. I really enjoyed each one. If I had to pick a favourite it would be 'Over The Moon' a story of a birthday that begins with tea and toast in bed, a grand total of three cards and one ...gift? That brought back memories and made me smile, you will have to read what happens next for yourself. Ms Ruth is a writer with a 'voice' of her own and has the ability to tell it how it is, not an easy thing to accomplish. It took me sometime to reach this book on my TBR list and it was well worth the wait.
Bravo Ms Ruth and thank you. I highly recommend this book to readers of all genres.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story, 17 Aug 2013

This is a story that deftly switches from the past to the present and back again.Helena is an elderly lady living in squalor. But her life wasn't always like this. As a beautiful, but fiesty, young woman of impeccable breeding she volunteers to serve as a spy for the SOE during WW11.Parachuted into France she risks her life to help the resistance in their struggle against Nazi tyranny. Then with WW11 long over her circumstances change and she is caught stealing food to live and assaults two security guards and two policemen. Prepared to face the judge her story begins to unfold.

This is a beautifully written story expressed with great tenderness. It takes the reader on a journey of a time long past, but never forgotten. Highly recommended

This isn't usually the type of book I would read, but I was gripped by the first page and wanted to read on. Not only a great story that tells of the hardships of a remote Scottish island over one hundred years ago, this book is beautifully written. The characters, young and old are well rounded and believable. The story drags the reader in and you begin to experience the resilience of the islanders as they battle to survive hardships most might run from in despair. Bravo Ms Byrne.

I highly recommend this book and understand a sequel is available. Not to be missed.

At last, the long awaitedcollection of short stories from a brilliant fantasy writer. Lisa Williamson has found something for everyone as she transports the reader into the unknown. Or is it the unknown, perhaps she knows something we don't. Be prepared to become engrossed in the mind of this wonderful writer.
Highly recommended.

Great title and the story certainly does it justice. This is a story of a young girls outstanding courage in her search for her grandfather. Her grandfather, a wealthy self imposed recluse doesn't know she exists. Will she find him and win him over. Well, I'm not going to tell you? You will have to buy this excellent story and find out for yourself, and you will be glad you did.
