I myself am a photographer and writer of books on the Western Himalayas and can thoroughly recommend this book to both the general and the scholarly reader. An important photographic archive of the best of the period's West Himalayan clay sculpture.

This review is from: Africa [DVD] (DVD)
Yet another classic David Attenborough documentary. Although never a fan of the modern style, jazzed-up with fast cuts and stupid dramatic music type of documentary, this one uses a few tasteful and thoughtfully placed soundtracks that genuinely enhance rather than detract from the viewing experience. The videography is truly stunning as we have come to expect from all of BBC's David Attenborough series. In my opinion as a professional still photographer, many of them are the best ever made.

Each episode concludes with a 'how we did it' section. An immense amount of time, expense and effort has been put in to obtain some unrepeatable footage - some showing previously unknown behaviour filmed for the first time.

Surely, all of David's BBC nature series DVD's - classics already - will provide the best archive footage of what the world once was as mankind slowly changes the planet for ever.
Well done David and the BBC for producing another important classic series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sennheiser HD449 closed back headphones, 8 Dec 2013

Reasonable build and good sound quality for the bucks. You get what you pay for. These phones are a good mid-price compromise between true hi-fi and cheapos.
Depending how you listen, very useful is the extension lead that gives a total length of 3 metres - for listening via a hi-fi system they should reach your comfortable listening chair. Gold plated 3.5 mm plug as standard with a 6.3 mm adaptor provided. Some complain the lead is a little thin but i dont think so. It's good quality and lightweight - important when using 3 metres of suspended lead from the hi-fi.

Indian Himalaya lam. terraQuest
Indian Himalaya lam. terraQuest

Edition: Map
Price: £14.32

3.0 out of 5 stars Indian Himalaya laminated map, 8 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A durable waterproof map of the Indian Western Himalayas for general use. One side shows the whole region at a scale of 1:750,000 as a road map. The other side shows a few selected trek routes at 1:350,000 scale with contour lines and altitudes shown at 500 metre intervals. Shown are: the most popular Ladakh trek routes, Spiti to Kullu and Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand (Gangotri etc). Darjeeling to Kanchenjunga is also included.
The trek maps are a bit basic and not highly detailed but provide enough info to be of some use. The place name spellings are accurate enough - not always the case with other maps of the area - although only the main sites and villages are shown. The trek routes seem reasonably accurate.
In summary, OK for general use and people paying a flying visit. For serious trekkers not the best available.

An excellent book that covers resident and migratory birds that are found in all of Thailand. Perfect for the serious amatuer birder. Good quality reproduction of plates that show both genders as well as birds in flight where that may help with identification. Sufficent detail about bird calls, size and habitat is provided.

4.0 out of 5 stars Olympus 8x25 PC 1 Binoculars, 8 Dec 2013

I bought these binoculars for bird spotting for which 8x is the best magnification factor to use. They are well made and light weight. With the 25mm objective lens diameter the PC 1's light gathering ability is perfect for spotting birds in dark shrubbery etc as well as for use in bright conditions.Thoroughly recommended as a mid-priced pair of binoculars for bird spotting and general use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Antiquities of Indian Tibet, 28 Dec 2011
For those interested in serious research into the History of Ladakh (Indian Tibet), this book is one of the standard scholarly works on the subject and therefore a prerequisit.
For the uninitiated however, it should be remembered that although Francke's research is of great importance and largely correct, nowadays, it is acknowledged by most scholars that his account does contain some errors.

Heavenly Himalayas: The Murals of Mangyu and Other Discoveries in Ladakh
Heavenly Himalayas: The Murals of Mangyu and Other Discoveries in Ladakh
by Peter Van Ham
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars A book about Mangyu monastery in Ladakh, 25 Jun 2011
As far as i am aware this is the only book currently available that covers in detail, in both text and photographs, the ancient murals of Mangyu Monastery in Ladakh. Peter van Ham's photographs of the murals in the various shrines at the moanstery are excellent and will doubtless aid any future scholarly research of this subject.

Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Cultural Heritage of Ladakh Vol I, 25 Jun 2011
An out of print book in second hand condition. The book arrived within a few days of placing my order and was very well packed. I am pleased with the good condition of this book which is over 30 years old and felt it was very good value. An excellent buy. The book now forms part of my collection of reference works on Ladakh. I myself am a professional writer specialising in the Himalayan region.

4.0 out of 5 stars WD's Elements 1TB external hard drive, 6 Jan 2011
I am a pro photographer who needs plenty of storage space to store my archive. My Western Digital 'Elements' 1TB hard drive came with only the UK 3 pin mains adapter fitting (the mains transformer unit has removable plug pin fittings). A bit of a shame as it is clear from the intruction sheet that it could have been supplied with a whole set of adaptors to fit all (worldwide) plug types. As a travel photographer this would have been very useful and would have avoided having to add further adaptors whenever i use the hard drive abroad - many other products such as battery chargers etc. come supplied with the whole set of pin adaptors. Listen up Western Digital.
Otherwise this is a great budget hard drive - very good value for money - that runs almost soundlessly. No silly built-in software either. My only other (small) gripe is that the mains wire that leads to the mains adaptor (transformer) is fairly thin guage.
