Excellent world-building, cohesive, melds seamlessly with her Emperor's Edge books.

And did I mention the story is great?
Labeling it as just "fantasy", "steam-punk" or "sci-fi" is trying to fit it into a neat little niche - don't.

Why not 5*? Because there are a few of her books which are even better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Evidently not just for kids!, 5 July 2015
I was given a copy of this book, and it is brilliant! Evidently not just for kids! At my age (late 50s) I really don't think I am part of the target audience as an adult, but since there are no children around to do the activities with, I've been trying some - it is really fun.

Some bring back memories, this is how play used to be when I was a kid. Other things are totally new to me, and as an adult some things have no interest at all. But there are SO many ideas, well presented ideas at that, there is going to be something to intrigue just about everyone.

Why not indulge your inner child and do the sign alphabet game while you are on the bus on the way to work? Write a 100 word story? Do a book swap? Or release a book into "Bookcrossing" (Look it up).

Ok, most things really are for children. A large range of children of different ages/abilities, but they are all fun. Clearly described, with appropriate language, and enough description to be able to follow the instructions.

At the end there some online safety tips, and a few recommendations of books on child development.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best was saved for last :), 24 April 2015
I was given an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was an excellent finale to the four book series; the story of the romance between the bodyguard hired by the sisters' boyfriends, and Daphne, the youngest Summer sister.

Although the story arc of saving the family's cottage and island is completed with this novel, I hope further books are written in this setting.

As usual, the writing is flawless. I hate editing errors, they really ruin books - with this one you can sit back and really enjoy the story without niggling annoyances. The prose is good, with an occasional Canadian or North American word or meaning to keep me on my toes!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but quite a cliff hanger ending, 20 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Consistently well written, but less humour than the previous two in the series. The intelligence implicit in it will show itself more to a Canadian native, I'm sure.

Although it *could* be read as a stand-alone book, it really benefits from the back stories in the first two Summer sisters books. (In each there's been a little nod to the Blueberry Springs novels too). The story arc is continued with the attempts to save the family cottage from being taken for back taxes (overdue Council Tax for the Brits!), with a scheming developer being thrown in the mix with the environmental bits. The romance is the icing on the top, with another of the Summer family sisters meeting her man.

The cliff hanger is written so integrally to the story that you must read book four, due for release on 24th April 2015. They aren't long books, which added to the "cut off" feeling at the end of this book. I will read book 4, which is the end of the series, but I hope that the author considers writing some novellas about Tigger and the honorary Summer sister, Simone.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'd like to visit Muskoka, looks like you meet some lovely people there., 19 April 2015

This is book two, of what is meant to be a series of four books, presumably one per Summer sister. The arc of the four books is on managing to keep the ownership of an old cottage on an island, to stop it being sold to pay back taxes. The island, and cottage, have been in the family for over a hundred years, and the tradition is that the family members find their true love there.

Book one had a lot of the background needed to be able to allow Love and Dreams (book 2) go along a bit faster, sidelining the corporate world. Although the secondary characters were less involved this time, I still felt the connections made by book one, Love and Rumors.
Less humour than the first book, and more explicit "romance".

I am looking forward to reading book three.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sweet Summer romance, 19 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Jean Oram has a knack for making the people in her books seem real, how ever unlikely they may be to meet in real life.

An excellent descriptive style of writing, interjected with some real world humour.

"And why do they call you Tigger?" "You gave me sugar, you figure it out".
"You Canadians apologize a lot." "I'm sorry, but we do not."

It ends on a small cliff-hanger, but that didn't really detract from the book, as the next one is ready waiting to be read.

A sweet Summer Romance :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A good science fiction story that was internally quite consistent, 9 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good science fiction story that was internally quite consistent, with excellent editing. A different type of survivalist sci-fi, with care and consideration in its concepts. Not quite the same level as previous ones in the series, but that wrapped it up well without being saccharine.

Obviously, since this is book 4, of 4, I liked the series! I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
