5.0 out of 5 stars Immense musicianship and writing., 3 Dec 2006
This review is from: Caminhos (Audio CD)
Dulce Pontes is an absolutely amazing singer. I don't believe anyone in popular music touches her in terms of technique and just plain aesthetic finesse. Each song, apart from often being musically deeply inspired, is also a vocal lesson. One thing that can be argued against is the production, which sometimes is less than ideally organic, although this is not too apparent. The songs and the musicianship speak for themselves, and I've listened to the album dozens of time and it wears remarkably well.

Primeiro Canto is also recommended, as probably an even better album.

Doctor Glas
Doctor Glas

5.0 out of 5 stars A discovery., 22 Jan 2003
This review is from: Doctor Glas (Hardcover)
A Swedish friend of mine recommended Söderberg to me, as the best Swedish writer of the fin-de-siecle. I have just finished reading it, I would enhance his opinion by saying Söderberg is one of the best fin-de-siecle writers, period. I will not go into depths here, I will only say that this short novel is written in diary form, and that the author displays an amazing control of form and style. It is exquisitely written. I was reading it at the same time as I was reading Kafka's "The Trial", and Kafka did not benefit from comparison.
Enter the dangerously rational mind of Doctor Glas.

The Darkness and the Light: Poems
The Darkness and the Light: Poems
by Anthony Hecht
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars at any rate., 15 Nov 2002
Even when he is not at his best, Hecht is certainly the best English-language contemporary poet. Besides, certain of these poems are among Hecht's best work.
Marked by formal mastery, the poems are small monuments of, by turns, wit and gravity, and sometimes both at the same time.
