5.0 out of 5 stars Great little unit with good support, 21 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well, after looking at a number of these devices I bought one of these as it was advertised as fully rooted and coming with online support and updates and here are my thoughts so far:

It arrived very quickly, with the correct UK power adapter and a simple remote (you'll need your own 2*AAA batteries), an HDMI cable and a composite video cable. It powered up correctly and output a pretty good picture through the HDMI.

It's also a pretty fast unit with screens appearing very quickly and comes pre-loaded with XBMC mediahub, mx media player (very good because it supports hardware acceleration) and a number of other free apps such as Netflix and Tv-Catchup all of which work very well.

The manual is, well, just like you expect most manuals from Chinese manufacturers to be, that is to say not terribly useful, and you won't be getting much help from that or the accompanying single A4 double-sided set-up instruction sheet I'm afraid. No matter, it's actually very easy to set up and use and they advertise full online support via forums..of which more later.

Anyway..on with the initial set-up.

The installation sheet advises you that you should set the time and date on the unit and the Wi-Ficonnection first so that's what I did. A warning first here..setting up anything involving text strings and screen selections with the accompanying simple remote is rather tortuous and you'll find life very much easier if you have a full keyboard remote and mouse or an 'air mouse' device like the RC11.

Alternatively they also have the apk and an operating manual on the forums for a smartphone remote controller via the pre-loaded EHome Media Centre on the unit..and it works very well indeed. My advice is install that as soon as you can. [Edit - After using this and the RC11 remote for a few days I would definitely just stick with the smartphone control if you can and save yourself some money on the RC11 .. the smartphone app is much easier]

Once the wireless connection is operational they also advise that you run the update for XBMC immediately and they provide a script to do just this. Once this script runs you'll be presented with a range of units to choose from, i.e. X8, X9, IMX or whatever...but no X7 device! Choose the X9 quad core one and it will run correctly. After that XBMC runs very well and you can use the full range of features that you may have come to expect on XBMC, playing videos, watching live TV and films, music videos, all the terrestrial catch-ups like Iplayer, 4OD, 5 Demand and the rest. Netflix too runs very well and the picture quality, though not HD from Nteflix of course, is actually very good. You can load up the familiar IPlayer, ITV player etc apps from the app store if you wish but frankly it's probably easier to watch them through XBMC.

Try running the installed TVCatchup and it will immediately tell you that it's an old version no longer supported and you'll have to update it. Simple to do and once you have it runs very well too.

Oh, one other point to watch out for. As the unit is shipped it is not set to full HD output, to do that you'll need to go into settings>display and change the HDMI mode to 1920*1080 @ 60 H if your television supports it. Do note though that most of the online catchup, film and TV services don't tend to offer much full HD yet anyway.

Problems I've found are that firstly, despite the advertised spec, it isn't actually a rooted unit, though tech support are in the process of putting a new image up for it now if you want to go ahead and root the unit. Bluetooth isn't actually supported on the unit either but that won't bother most people at all.

Internet bandwith on these units, like most small android devices including my SGS3 and Nexus 10 is well capable of supporting HD streams but if you have a fibre-optic service as I do you'll find that they all top out at about 20-23Mbits/sec either through the ethernet or wireless connection...so don't expect them to give you full speed on your 40mbit or higher Internet connection. I imagine it's just firmware limited and may get faster with future releases and it's actually no problem at all for watching video.

Conclusion: It's a great little unit, fast and flexible with lots of interfaces for storage, network, sound and video connections. Picture quality is good and it's very handy having all the essential apps pre-loaded.

Tech support via the forums has so far been very good and very quick. The forums are obviously pretty new but growing and though you might be able to get a similar unit elsewhere with no support and no updates a bit cheaper I wouldn't recommend it unless you're pretty tech-savvy.

One last comment to save you some of the grief I had with watching Iplayer through XBMC. If Iplayer crashes, rare but it can happen, it effectively locks the video streams. Before you use it it through XBMC go to XBMC->System-Settings >Add-ons > Enabled add-ons >Video add-ons >Iplayer >Configure> Advanced and disable HTTP cache.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Wireless Router with Excellent Range, 15 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent product, expensive but at least in my case gives strong coverage (min 72mbits) around a reasonably large house with no problem. Gigabit ethernet support and near gigabit routing speeds.

Good range of features ..and even better if you use some of the Open-Source firmware available from Merlin Asuswrt which provides full Open VPN support, Sky Fibre support etc etc.

Automatic 3G mobile broadband backup can be achieved by attaching an Android phone or USB dongle to one of the USB ports and shared printer and/or disk support is easy via the other USB port.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Fast Drive - but use the Magician Utilty Included, 6 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A blisteringly quick drive, 2-3 times the speed of the Corsair Force 3 it replaced. Do run the supplied Samsung Drive Magician software though, particularly if you have cloned an existing installation onto the drive, as this will optimise storage and OS settings for maximum performance. This alone can make a very big difference to the real-world speed you'll get.

The 5 year warranty is very good and frankly if you can afford it this is the drive to have, you won't be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good cheap alternative..but it doesn need 'conditioning', 20 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a good cheap alternative to the original SGS2 battery..but it does need conditioning to deliver full power. Charge it fully for 10 hours or more to start with and then let it run down to <20% and charge fully again. Repeat this a few times and battery life rockets up.

2.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable product, awful software, 13 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If all you want is simple un-secured push-button connection then this product is fine but try to do anything with the truly awful support software and you'll be pulling your hair out. It doesn't work with Windows 7 64bit version at all (because it uses a free packet inspection utility not yet available for W764) and once you've found some other PC to run it on the supplied configuration utility will happily tell you there is only one homeplug adaptor on your network when you already have two up, connected and passing data.

The upshot of all of this is that you actually don't need any software to get the adaptors connecting and working ..but then you have no security at all (not sensible in this day and age) and no way of configuring the units properly or performing diagnostics.

Buy something else is my advice, just for decent software support.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference work, 28 Feb 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Fly-Tying Bible (Spiral-bound)
An excellent reference work for the fly-tier. Very clear instructions and photos on a large range of wet and dry trout, sea trout and salmon flies, nymphs and streamers. Recommended.
