1.0 out of 5 stars Patronising and banal, 19 July 2014
A disappointing book which concentrates on basically stating the obvious and patronising the reader. I particularly hated the use of italics and red type as pointers to tell me, presumably part of the rather-less-clever-than-de-Botton herd what was important. Disclaimer: I didn't finish the book. Life's too short...

Now a book on this subject by a topnotch sociologist, like Laurie Taylor maybe, would be well worth reading. This self-regarding pontification, not so much.

1.0 out of 5 stars So disappointing, dull and pointless, 19 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Gravity [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
I love sci-fi and this movie sounded like ti was going to be exciting fun, from all the publicity/hype. I have never seen anything so dull in my life. I suppose that watching it at home you lose the real point, which is supposedly the special effects, which I concede may have been at least worth watching on a big screen, but there have been many great space movies with special effects and wonderful stories and performances. This movie had no plot, no character, nothing of any interest from start to finish. Total waste of money and time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 5 Feb 2014
Really excellent for kids, and fantastic value for money. I have bought a number of much more expensive cases for my young son and they have not been nearly as good as this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disgusting and should be immediately removed, 12 Dec 2013
I have complained to Amazon. This book advocates the physical abuse of children, including very small children and should be immediately removed from the site.

1.0 out of 5 stars Values way out of kilter with today's world!, 27 Dec 2012
This review is from: Dear Enemy (Paperback)
I always loved Daddy Long Legs and so thought I would enjoy this. It's OK, nowhere near the magic of DLL though. But the disturbing thing is realising how different things were in childcare when this book was written. The treatment of the children in the orphanage includes not only blatent discrimination between boys and girls (the boys get to camp out like "Indians" all summer, the girls stay in and sew), and the labelling of children by their heredity, but also a scene of physical abuse of a child that today would land Sallie in prison. All very jarring to a modern ear.

When She Woke
When She Woke
by Hillary Jordan
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.19

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather thin in plot and characterisation, 10 Nov 2012
This review is from: When She Woke (Paperback)
From the blurb and some other reviews I was expecting something really special and with a good plot and some philosophical weight (comparisons to Margaret Attwood appeared on the cover). It is in fact, although perfectly readable, a thin and rather disappointing read. No really novel insights, cardboard cutout characters, and an essentially one-track and eventually boring plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant: reminded me of Joseh Heller, 10 Nov 2012
This review is from: Hope: A Tragedy (Paperback)
The funniest book I have ever read is Good as Gold by Joseph Heller. This book reminded me a lot of it and was nearly as funny, as well as being serious and hugely thought-provoking as well. Highly recommended, and if you liked and have not read Heller's book, do yourself a favour and get it!

Childs Wooden Pull Along Shape Sorter with 10 Animal Shapes
Childs Wooden Pull Along Shape Sorter with 10 Animal Shapes

2.0 out of 5 stars not much use as a shape sorter, 10 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a nice looking toy but totally useless as a shape sorter as the animal shapes can be pushed through any of the holes, not just their "own" hole, so it does not have any shape sorting function at all really.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun and useful but not perfect, 28 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought to protect the iPad as it is used by my three year old, who likes to throw it at times! It is certainly fun looking and raises a smile, and seems (so far) to bounce pretty nicely when chucked across a room! But it is let down by a couple of things. First: no screen protection. Second: it can only stand bolt upright so you cannot angle the iPad at all (and when it is standing a little push from a busy finger pushes it over).

I am still searching for the perfect case: one which is sturdy and protective, with a stand which can be placed at different angles and is also sturdy and does not break off. This one is fun for now but it is not the one I am looking for...
