Prety much from the opening line of dialogue you know the script is banal.. Melissa Georges character berates a fellow climber with words that would even sound/look wrong coming from a character in a book.. The whole thing is ruined by cardboard dialogue(that must have only sounded correct in the scriptwriter head after a bottle of ginwizz), pedestrian performances and by the numbers direction..

Its only saving grace is some nice photography but even thats ruined by mismatched and very flat lighting and location matching giving the impression that the actors sequences have been inserted into a BBC wildlife documentary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mess of ideas and styles, 28 Aug 2014
This review is from: Transcendence [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Its okay..barely... Its main problem is it doesnt know what it wants to be and ends up as a mishmash of every film covering the same ideas and more .. Think Westworld/Gattaca/the stepford wives/ and any other slightly random idea to do with AI or the future thrown into the pot and you end up with a bit of a mess lazily sketched out and acted.

Its not helped by the leads who all seem to be here for the money and offer phone in roles devoid of emotion. The direction doesnt help nor the editing which heavy handedly tries to tie the various stylistic and story ideas together.

There are worse films out there but only get this if you really are short of something to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb - Fresh - but ultimately flawed by its title, 30 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Criminally closed before its time and shackled and weighted down by one of the worst titles to ever grace a musical this is actually some fine work.. Highly romantic in the style of Aspects with the darkness of Women in White - the contemporary pieces slot in nicely.

Its unfortunately not helped either by some utterly dreadful lyrics by Don Black which are so cringe worthy in places they make you shudder with disbelief.

But the music and performances are good.. Hope it gets a run on tour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Liked it with reservations, 30 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Emma Thomson is simply superb and the whole idea is good with great performances from the two timelines from all involved.. The problem is its all a bit nicety nice.. It would have been more interesting to see W Disney portrayed and written more realistically than this rather sugar sweet version Hanks and the director show us.

Pure fiction (it didnt happen like this other than the tape recorder) but well performed and directed given the bias of the script

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 and a half... Good if little thin, 30 April 2014

Starts of in an interesting biographical style, but quickly seems to end on a brief season recap.. Interesting cpl and a better biography would probably be very interesting.

Kindle version is terribly formatted.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but to0 philosophical for its own good, 4 Mar 2014
The good is a great performance from Bullock (which has to be a first).. Great direction and possibly the best representation of space ever..

Its intense and moving at times but it does this in a way that starts to annoy especially in the first and final acts. The whole set up seems to go on way past its sell by date and by the time you get to the end you have seen so many metaphorical images they become pointless ( because they are literally rammed down your throat). I respect Alfonso for getting this made and the way they managed to realise his project but in the end it seems to forget about the audience..

Its a nice piece but it should have been a 50min short film as apart from the central section and last 10 mins almost every sequence goes on longer than it needs to do.

3 stars in total and worth watching .. 4 starts if you include Bullocks shorts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stick with it... it gets better, 10 Feb 2014
This review is from: About Time [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
My biggest issue with the film was its opening 30minutes.. Poor Dialogue, contrived scenes and cut and paste Curtis scenarios.. However it does get better and shows more of a heart as time progresses..

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, 23 Oct 2013
It reads like a sketch for a story where any attempt at atmospheric writing was left behind for later; only later never came.

All in all I'm quite suprised the editor didnt send it back and Im more confused as to why its been getting high rates!

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice plot .. Terrible writing, 27 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Nice plot, some decent characters but the grammar and language is pretty poor. Why bother atmospherically setting the scene when you can just write "It was pi**ing it down" as part of the descriptive text. And how many times do I have to be told how loud a generator was in the first chapter. I got the impression the expected word count could not be reached and the author went back to fill it up. Oddly once you become used to it the story is quite compelling but I doubt I would bother with an other from the author.

3.0 out of 5 stars When they were superb, 31 July 2013
This review is from: At The BBC (Audio CD)
Its really a pity that this seems to have been affected and spoiled by poor mastering and terrible compression in places but as a package its still great.. (If you want to hear the original albums in all there power find the originals on vinyl).. I still have a crappy TDK tape of the peel sessions recorded on the night and it sounds full of more life and dynamics than this mess..

The great thing (despite the iffy Sound Quality at times) is the amount of great choices in the BBC pieces.. Some pure class and a million miles away from the sad - almost tribute band naffness they have now become..

Re the package it could have been a bit better - 2 of the the CDs had creased sleeves and the whole sleeve thing has its own issues.. The DVD is a bit -meh -- Some of the excerpts really dont stand up to watching any more even as a historical piece as they are so poor in quality and forced performance.. The live concert pieces are great though (though Im sure some of these pieces had a film source so why not give us a better version instead of a basic cheap video upscale)
