5.0 out of 5 stars Works fine with JVC Projectors, 19 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Neat and lightweight and recharges from the USB socket on your Player or other device. I thought they were not going to work with my Active System JVC Projector but a tap on the tiny control button on the spec's frame swiftly reversed the polarity and yielded a stunning 3D picture of Life of Pi. These glasses are a fraction of the price of JVC's own and don't have expensive replaceable (heavy) batteries to change.Strongly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars dreadful quality transfers, 13 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I fully endorse the other revue. It looks like a first effort by someone who doesn't know how his equipment works. For the most part the pictures are virtually unwatchable - totally burnt out highlights and colours washed away. There cannot be the usual excuse that source material was poor as even reproductions of official photos of Dr Beeching, in several cases, are completely burned out to the extent that his features are wiped out altogether. The producers should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves for issuing this abomination.

4.0 out of 5 stars The new Blu-ray, 11 Dec 2012

Eagerly awaiting this, said to be fully restored, old Technicolor favourite. I have the existing DVD but it is of awful quality.

3.0 out of 5 stars Revue of the new Blu-ray, 18 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Of course this is a wonderful film, I remember seeing it with my parents at the Odeon ,Elmers End when it was first released. This was in the good old days when we had to queue round the block to get in to the Sunday evening performance and - yes -it was Pouring with Rain at the time ! I've seen it many times since as it is so realistic to the times depicted. Also all the familiar faces in the cast were perfect . I particularly liked Sidney Tafler as the philandering record shop (78s !)owner and John Slater as the wide boy. But for me the favourite has to be dear little Edie Martin "nice weather for ducks" who seemed to be in every Rank and Ealing Film as the querky little old lady.
I was looking forward to a real Blu-ray treat from Studio Canal for this universally loved classic and settled in front of my 6 foot screen and loaded the disc to project on my JVC dla hd 350 - which can give a really crisp B and W picture with deep blacks. I recently obtained The Lavender Hill Mob in the restored -by Deluxe Labs- Canal Blu-ray which was very impressive,so this item in the same series should be equally good. I thought I would look at the Special Features first and things looked promising with nice close up HD colour interviews where you could see every hair on people's heads. But then we were shown clips from the film - What dreadful Quality ! Completely washed out contrastless pictures. I had to crank up the projector settings to +40 Contrast and lower Brightness to -20 to get any kind of definition. Of course then the newly shot colour material was wrong.
With trepidation I then selected the feature. More disappointment, more low contrast pictures, titles not sharp - DVD quality.
Unless you are able to tinker with the contols of your equipment you will not be able to appreciate the superb photography at the end of the film. I don't think anybody at Studio Canal has bothered to view the Film - what a shame. So I would rate the Film at 5 Stars but the transfer at only 3 Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last a Firm Date !, 12 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Have been waiting since 1960 to get my hands on a genuine Copy of all these fabulous yarns and now can Bin my unofficial, grotty "off the Tele" edition from E-Bay early in January 2013.
I have just received my 2 disc set of The Scales of Justice - and what Fabulous Quality from the Network folks ! Beautiful perfectly graded crisp Black and White photography with not a scratch or blob of dirt to be seen - not even a changeover cue dot.
The only complaint: The French Company Studio Canal have bought up the Library and they insist on forcing you to endure their Ear Splitting "Logo from Hell" at the start of every half hour episode ( 15 times on the Scales of Justice set ) - could be about 45 times on the Scotland Yard set so be prepared with your volume control set at minimum to start with !

5.0 out of 5 stars Playing this in Europe, 25 Mar 2012

Everybody should see this inspirational film. As some people have pointed out it is only available as a Region 1 USA DVD. This is no problem. Nearly every DVD player can easily converted to play Region 1 Titles simply by tapping in a code number with the remote control. Try "dvd.reviewer.co.uk" for how to do it. If you have a Panasonic, Sony or Pioneer you will need a Special Remote Contral to unlock it - available from UK outfit "GenuineCopies.TV" at only a tenner. Amazon UK are doing the DVD at a very good price, so do it now !

4.0 out of 5 stars Technicolor and Widescreen !, 4 Sep 2010

This review is from: The Glenn Miller Story [DVD] (DVD)
Despite Amazon listing this Old Favourite as being in Black & White, it is of course in Color. In fact it was one of the last films to be made using the Technicolor three strip camera + I.B. printing. This would have meant that the Original camera ratio would have been 1.33:1 (4:3) - but this DVD is in anamorphic 1.85:1 (16:9) ~ However at the time it was made there was a scramble by Exhibitors to instal new W I D E R Screens to keep up with CinemaScope and regular films were mercelessly cropped to fit. I must admit that nobody's head or feet appear to be chopped off so maybe the film was framed with plenty of headroom and legroom. If the film is ever restored and issued as a Blu-Ray Special Edition it should be in the original Format of 4:3 so that the viewer can tinker with the ratio himself.
Loved the film when it first came out and have been a lifelong Miller Fan.

1.0 out of 5 stars Triumph of the Will (red cover), 4 July 2010
This is without doubt the worst quality DVD I have ever obtained - and that includes duds from Madacy. I projected it onto a 5 foot screen via JVC DLA HD1 and was amazed at the worse than VHS quality of the picture - apparently pirated from a t.v. broadcast. After a while I realised that the top and bottom of the picture, including the second line of the barely legible subtitles, was missing. In 1935 the universal Aspect Ratio was 4:3 but circles i.e. the Nazi swastica were squashed in - switching the Aspect to anamorphic 16;9 corrected this. What kind a outfit commits this most basic transfer error ?

Don't waste your money on this - the only decent thing is the Box. Apparently a restored version by Accent is available on Region 4 in Australia.
