3.0 out of 5 stars Peter Nichols The Rocks, 15 Mar. 2015
This review is from: The Rocks (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Author Peter Nichols appears to be an interesting fellow. The blurb describes him as being a former yacht master and best selling author. However, his ambition in The Rocks, appears to have overwhelmed his creativity as I found it becalmed in still waters for long sections.
Ostensibly the tale of love and intrigue set over sixty years, despite the characters being well drawn and believable, much of the story gets lost in the telling. I notice that other readers also found themselves underwhelmed by the author's ambition.
I found myself taking a Holiday from The Rocks before picking it up again. more out of a sense of duty than pleasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars GoCat Crunchy for Kittens, 14 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
One of out cats is just going out of the kitten phase and becoming a young cat. However, we tried him with this GoCat Crunchy feed this morning and he appeared to enjoy it. The makers advertise that the feed helps develop strong clean teeth and provides all the nutrition and minerals a growing cat needs. The four x 1kg bags we received are competitively priced and should last quite a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Low price Bytrestor high sppeed card., 14 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Bytestor flash card is advertised as a low cost alternative to big brands like Sony. Tried it this morning in a camcorder and it formated straight away and recorded perfectly. The SD card converter means you can obviously use it with standard appliances like Digital cameras or tablets. Should record about 50/60 minutes on a standard cam

Data Fluency: Empowering Your Organization with Effective Data Communication
Data Fluency: Empowering Your Organization with Effective Data Communication
by Zach Gemignani
Edition: Paperback
Price: £21.34

4.0 out of 5 stars Data Fluency: Empowering your organisation, 13 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A comprehensive work which will be of great value to both business/IT students and practitioners. The authors blurb listed on the Amazon page offers an insight into the wealth of experience which they bring to the table.

"Zach Gemignani is co–founder and CEO of Juice Analytics. He works with companies with companies to build analytics–savvy organizations and develop analytical tools that focus on getting the human elements right. Chris Gemignani is also co–founder of Juice Analytics and previously Chris was a VP analyst at Citibank and PNC bank. Dr. Richard Galentino is CEO of Stratable, Inc., a strategic planning and organizational development consulting firm. Dr. Patrick Schuermann is a Harvard International Education Policy Fellow. Nathan Yau (Consulting Editor) has a PhD in statistics and is a statistical consultant helping clients make use of their data through visualization. Nathan is the author of the best–selling visualization books, Visualize This and Data Points.'.

In Data Fluency etc, they offer an all round holistic approach by examining the material sourced through the multifarious collation strategies employed by businesses and organisations and looking at the dynamics of these systems and how best to extract the positive and rewarding information therein and those best practice methods of filtering this 'good' material from the digital detritus.

The Lives of Women
The Lives of Women
by Christine Dwyer Hickey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.08

3.0 out of 5 stars The Lives of Women, 12 Mar. 2015
This review is from: The Lives of Women (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I think this would appeal more to female readers. Despite author Christine Dwyer Hickey's reputation as a writer of quality, 'The Lives of a Woman' is a bit of a slow burner. It's transatlantic tale of quiet mystery, unresolved issues and brooding discontent. However, the tale never reaches areas where you are engaged and hooked in. My partner read it after me and she quite enjoyed it so perhaps the gender comment is appropriate in the circumstances.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phillips simple steam iron., 12 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I got this to take to a holiday let and its perfect. Unlike the last steam iron I got from Amazon which with it's huge cradle resembled a drone!, this simple Phillips steam iron is small, functional and does the job. Not too much to add to other satisfied reviewers. It doesn't drip when you tip it back, is easy to use and the makers claim it will deal with hard to iron items such as suit jackets etc.
I imagine it would be handy as a travel iron, for people who live in small spaces like bedsits or narrowboats etc.
A really good price for a qualitative item.

Femen
Femen
by Femen
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.79

3.0 out of 5 stars Femen by Galia Ackermann, 9 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Femen (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
My interest in this book was stimulated by seeing the attractive author, Galia Ackerman interviewed on the UK's Newsnight programme. Since her groups inception, The Ukraine has fallen into bloodshed and the feminist ideals which they champion have been placed on the back burner. In Eastern Europe generally, the punk ethic of groups like Femen and Pussy Riot appear in 2015 to be somewhat detached from reality in that misogyny, racism and homophobia appear to be on the rise if anything.

The book explores that ethic and the tactics which the group hopes will help break down boundaries and hasten a new age of enlightenment and liberty. Unfortunately, I find these utopian tracts somewhat dispiriting in their failure to recognize the reality of how societies function and how far we are from the type of societies group like this fight for.

Nothing wrong with idealism but it needs to be laced with a heavy dose of realism.

Mental Health Nursing at a Glance

4.0 out of 5 stars Mental Health Nursing at a Glance., 9 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Despite its slim (112 pages) of content. Blackwell's Mental Health Nursing at a Glance, is an excellent overview of the subject which will be appreciated by both students and new practitioners alike.I'm not sure of the author's background in this area? but he is certainly well versed in all the relevant areas of practice, legislation, care and communication skills.

Covering all bases, Grahame Smith's concise and intelligent work is a perfect pre-exam 'dip into' book to help refresh students with areas which might have fallen away from immediate memory. For non students like myself, it is of great interest to anyone who has an interest in the subject or who has an experience of friends or family members who may have suffered from mental health problems.

Nanoinnovation: What Every Manager Needs to Know
Nanoinnovation: What Every Manager Needs to Know
by Michael Tomczyk
Edition: Paperback
Price: £37.50

4.0 out of 5 stars NanoInnovation: What Every Manager Needs to Know, 4 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
What exactly is 'Nanoinnovation' the layman might ask? One of the world's leading global players outlines it as..."Nano scale represents one billionth of a meter (0.000 000 001m). The word “Nano” is derived from the Greek word vᾶvoς (nanos), meaning “dwarf.” Breakthroughs in nanotechnology have provided an unprecedented ability to synthesize, deposit, manipulate, and integrate novel materials at nano scale. This has allowed major product performance enhancements and creation of new products. Nano scale materials provide high surface-to-volume ratios, pristine material properties, novel material behavior, and greater packing density. These simple yet powerful abilities are generating the manufacturing innovations of the 21st century. Billions of dollars of nanotechnology research and development have led to product innovations across numerous market sectors and improved quality of life across the globe.'

Well, that explains it better than I ever could! Michael Tomczyk brings the subject to life in a work aimed at those in business or in the field whose interests are defined in commercial terms. For those who are in awe of the miniaturization of digital information for example and who wonder where it will all end? the author offers a future perspective based on his observations re current research and development. A rapidly expanding field with vast potential and possibilities.

The Shepherd's Life: A Tale of the Lake District
The Shepherd's Life: A Tale of the Lake District

4.0 out of 5 stars The Shepherd's Life, 4 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Being a lover of Cumbria and the Fells, I was looking forward to reading James Rebanks 'The Shepherd's Life' not having read any of the author's previous works. James specialty-if you can put it like that- is the beautiful Herdwick breed of of sheep. The hardy grey/black sheep which roams the fells and which Beatrix Potter is recorded as having saved from extinction.
The authors style is engaging and easy to read. Ranging through the seasons; recording the many trials and tribulations which is the shepherds lot! Of course the keeping of sheep in the uplands is a controversial issue with environmentalists who point out the damage sheep to to fragile eco-systems, farmers of course, insist the landscape we know and love has been created by sheep cropping virtually everything that pushes through the soil.
In truth, landscapes like the Lakes are somewhat artificial as intensive sheep husbandry is only about 300 years old. Before that, much of the uplands and valleys were forested.
Naturally the author would not subscribe to the 'grazed to the bone' theory regarding the negative impact of sheep grazing but he is certainly aware of environmental issues surrounding four legged vegetation hoovers!
Its an interesting insiders take on sheep farming and the author imparts plenty of previously unknown facts and figures surrounding this branch of the agri-business
