5.0 out of 5 stars Carl Schmitt: A Biography, 30 Nov. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This weighty near 800 page tome, is something of a tour-de-force from author Reinhard Mehring,Professor of Political Science at Heidelberg University of Education .Comprehensively dissecting the life and work of one of the twentieth century's great political/ legal theorists and philosopher, whose long life-he died aged 97-spanned mankind's darkest periods. A period which included a flirtation with fascism during the rise of Nazism in Germany which saw him closely aligned with many of the tenets of National Socialists . For this reason, many liberals and academics on the political left find Schmitt's theories both unpalatable and outside the bounds of recognized pluralistic political culture.
His Catholic upbringing in what was Prussia, instilled in him a deep conservatism which remained even after he rejected Catholicism.
His controversial support for Fascist figures like General Franco in Spain and his belief in laissez-faire capitalism has made Schmitt something of a hero figure for the political right in contemporary politics, including the US Tea Party movement and European conservative parties.
The author has successfully unthreaded the enigma that is Carl Schmitt and deconstructed the complexities and contradictions of a figure who has previously appeared almost undefinable beyond the general public image of the man.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phillips Speedcare Compact steam iron., 28 Nov. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Well...it's a steam iron but at £200 it's not the sort of steam iron your granny would recognize! This space age Phillips device is said to use state of the art technology which is said to be twice as powerful than a normal steam iron Furthermore, the manufacturers claim it will cut your ironing time in half. It's certainly quite light in the hand and does the business on my shirts and jeans. However, I can't honestly say I could notice that much difference compared to my old iron, in fact, any old iron...boom boom !
It's good but I can't get past that price tag I'm afraid.

2.0 out of 5 stars Walking Home...let's hope she stays there!, 28 Nov. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm afraid I couldn't warm to this book or the author due to a deep seated intolerance of self promoting New Age mystics. According to the blurb.. "Sonia Choquette is a world-renowned author, storyteller, vibrational healer and six-sensory teacher who regularly visits the UK. She's the author of several bestselling books, including Diary of a Psychic, Ask Your Guides, Travelling at the Speed of Love and Trust Your Vibes. Sonia was educated at the University of Denver and the Sorbonne in Paris, and holds a PhD in metaphysics from the American Institute of Holistic Theology."

Sheesh...anyone got a sick bag! The wonderful, divine Ms Choquette story revolves around her overcoming personal tragedy and finding herself by undertaking the popular Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail in Spain where..."Eventually, mortification of the flesh gave way to spiritual renewal, and she rediscovered the gifts of humility and forgiveness that she needed to repair her world.'

Sigh!!!for God's sake woman...get a life....PLEASE!

Following on from Wiley's popular third edition, Handbook of MRI technique offers a comprehensive and up to date overview aimed at practitioners and students alike. Author, Catherine Westbrook, described in the blurb as " a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for the MSc MRI programme at Anglia Ruskin University, and an independent teaching consultant, providing teaching and assessment in MRI and radiographic subjects worldwide ' With that professional background it is no surprise to find a highly readable and structured profile of the subject which aims to address areas which might require fresh insight in light of current legislation and health requirements.

Make Your People Before you Make Your Products: Using Talent Management to Achieve Competitive Advantage in Global Organizations

4.0 out of 5 stars Make your people before you make your products., 24 Nov. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Authors Paul Turner and Danny Kalman are experienced business people who bring their expertise to bear in a thoughtful and useful appraisal of best business practice in 'Make your People before you make your profits'.
It might appear that developing a happy and contented workforce would be at the very top of an entrepreneurs list of priorities. However, it is remarkable how even in this day and age, their are still bosses out there who operate in an almost feudal manner. Treating the staff like commodities rather than people.
The author's not surprisingly share 'The Shackleton Philosophy'. That is where a manager will lead by example and share in in the risks, rewards and occasionally failures, with their staff. It's a philosophy based on mutual interest and respect and as such, should be at the heart of any intelligent enterprise in 2014.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stress-Free Cooking for the Festive Season, 24 Nov. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Author, James Ramsden-any relation to Harry?- offers a comprehensive and well illustrated guide to making the biggest meal of the year, a joy instead of a burden.Chock full of interesting and appertising recipes, the young writer brings together meal ideas old and new but often with a new twist.
Apart from recipes, James suggests time saving ideas which will help the main event go without a hitch. Anyone who has ever made a Xmas dinner will have experienced ;the cold turkey syndrome!' That's when you have so many things on the go that it becomes impossible to get everything on the plate at the same time. With the Turkey carved and ready to serve, the parsnips are still bubbling away on the stove and the stuffing looks decidedly under-cooked! Never mind...help is at hand!

A nice 200 page Christmas book which will also make a nice present.

Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Becoming the perfect gentleman, 24 Nov. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As soon as I started this I realised it wasn't my bag. Who will it appeal to...I'm not sure? The author, Zach Falconer-Barfield writes a book which is intended to be 'a gentleman's bible'. But who apart from some aspiriational male airhead wants to be like something out of a PG Wodehouse novel !

Oh Dear....it's as if the 21st century never happened !

Philips E14 Small Edison Screw 6 Watt LED Dimmable Luster, Warm White
Price: £9.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Phillips E14 Edison Screw light bulb., 19 Nov. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Phillips small Edison screw 6 watt bulb certainly looks a bit rad compared to conventional energy saving bulbs. In fact the bulb itself resembles a lotus flower! As for performance. I obviously can't measure its promised longevity yet although Phillips claim its average life is 20.000 hours! Provides a warm soft light and is dim-able to boot! Not cheap initially but certainly in the long run it will more than pay for itself in saved electricity.
