4.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing slide into chaos and despair., 15 Aug 2014

This is a really well-crafted tale of a man's day/life sliding into terror. Richard Farren-Barber writes even better here, IMHO, than in his previous novella, "The Power of Nothing". He draws convincing characters by observing minor details in their surroundings and behaviour. Without giving spoilers, I thought the descriptive references to opaque windows were really effective in hiding some horrors, yet psychologically intensifying the reader's anxiety. The ending is intriguing, reminding me subtly of themes in Cormac McCarthy's "The Road". An engrossing read; I hope to see a full novel published soon!

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and unusual., 13 Aug 2014

This is an unusual concept, refreshing in its use of Cumbrian teenage girls as the main protagonists in a sci-fi style novel. I struggled to get into it at first but then thought it picked up pace and cohesion considerably. There's plenty of humour and some deftly phrased sections. The northern English setting/language worked well most of the time, though the Americanism of a school "principal" (rather than a head-teacher) didn't sit right for me. I was often reminded of "The Terminator" by the discourse structure and the girls' changed aspects later on made me think of the old "Starman" movie. Hints also of the sensory-driven-exploratory language used by the proto-dragons in Robin Hobb's Rain Wilds books. As a criticism, I think sometimes the (modern) girls' cultural references were unconvincing (Tanita Tikaram and Talk Talk?!) and the narration was sometimes too verbose for teen sociolect ("loci of life" + "an almost balanchine choreography"). Overall an entertaining and unusual book. Well worth the acquisition.

The Good Man Jesus and The Scoundrel Christ (Myths)
The Good Man Jesus and The Scoundrel Christ (Myths)
by Philip Pullman
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £14.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept., 7 Aug 2014

Bought cheap second-hand copy as I like Pullman's stuff and the concept seemed fascinating. Very quick, easy read. Written as a cross between biblical style and more colloquially phrased version. Interesting but not as satisfying as a novel.

Frustrating! I bought this as it sounded similar to "31 Songs". It IS "31 Songs"........ Same book, re-packaged. Waste of money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fab - must get more!, 5 July 2014

What a fab album - I must get more John Foxx! I got this on a wave of Ultravox nostalgia....I got into them with the "Vienna" album (though I like that track less than most on the album) and got all their best stuff. "U-Vox" was pretty poor.... I got a best-of album to explore their pre-Ure stuff and I really like it. This is terrific.
