5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 27 May 2014
This review is from: SSH (Paperback)
Not much for poetry, but this little book could change my mind! It was so well thought out, the ideas and feelings written about very sensitively dealt with. A beautiful book, with, for me 'The Mother' being the poem I have gone back to again and again.
Loved this little book! Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Story, 28 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Feast moving right from the beginning, it takes the reader back in time to the forest in which Robin lived. Events occur, build up really very seamlessly and quite naturally for Robin and his men to deal with - Tucks injury and rescue, Guy of Gisbourne hunting him down,The Wolf and the Raven (The Forest Lord) the betrayal by one of his men, all making this a really good read. Running almost parallel is the story of the Knight (which could in fact have stood alone! ).
Gone are the self concious explanations from some of the characters for things they did, they now stand alone! Mature writing, a massive advance on the style of the first book. What will Guy of Gisbourne do next, how will Robin react. Looking forward to volume three already!

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a shocker!, 7 Mar 2014

Fascinating, very well written novel with so many twists and turns it was really quite amazing. About half way through I thought well that's it I know who did it, only to find a who cast of characters that could have committed the crime. It was/is really well thought out book with two superb protagonists at opposite ends of the character scale who really work off each other. Loved it and really recommend the novel!

4.0 out of 5 stars What a subject!, 20 Feb 2014

A fascinating novel beginning in a village forge, culminating in the Holy Land, and returning back to the original village. You are taken with the young' hero' through all of his many adventures pretty seamlessly.
Lots of insights into many aspects of medievel life both in England and in . the Holy land are explored and talked about, but for me only briefly thus my 4 stars. Parts of this book weren't just too short, which is a great shame, as I really enjoyed it. I'd certainly recommend it, damned good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 24 Jan 2014

A superb novel written about a period of our history I know little about. Pre Norman invasion was a very violent time to live, excellently described. Dwellings were cold and it seems women were the bottom of the social pile, obedient to the point of almost being prisoners of their husbands.Set in the backdrop savage Viking raids, a King afraid to do anything about them, this novel follows Emma of Normandy from being happy with life thorough being an unwanted and unloved wife to finally giving birth to a son she really could and did love. After all the violence and savagery the had gone before the scenes surrounding this birth were beautifully sensitively described- 5stars anytime!

Bought by mistake, this book turned out to be one of my better mistakes- a Chinese lad and his girlfriend face racialism in a small town in the US, but on top of that pupils go missing at their school, some turning up dead. The book takes the reader through really, the thoughts of Xing (the youth) to a really surprise conclusion. It is odd and personal, and a really good read, worth recomending.Crossing

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing!, 30 Oct 2013

This novel was recommended to me, thank goodness I took the recommendation seriously! I t was really interesting and quite intriguing in its plot changes, with certain characters taking on rolls I didn't expect. The Elizabethan, Walsingham is involved, as are members of the nobility up to no good.Thomas Kyd comes out of the story well, Kit Marlowe, was Kit Marlowe! It was really well researched and did for me show Elizabethan London from a different perspective. A really well written story. At the end the main charecter was in France-hope this means there are more novels in the pipeline! Highly recommended.

Being a big fan of novels about Rome I took a chance and read this, a chance well made it was a superb read! Even the bits of 'fantasy'(the reason why I hadn't considered it before)fitted in so well with the story! It was fast moving and completely absorbing, so much so I read it in three days! thanks!King of Ithaca (Adventures of Odysseus)

4.0 out of 5 stars A superb retelling, 22 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A fast paced, exciting novel retelling of the story of Robin Hood. At times I could almost see the places in the forest where action took place, they were so well described by the author, at the same time I could feel the hatred of the peasants for the nobles who were rich and well fed while they starved in the winter. Robin was an awful lot more violent than I thought {being brought up on Richard Greenes 'Robin Hood'!} but it stands to reason he would have to be,and I didn't like the name name Matilda (it should be Marian-Richard Greene influence again!}
An actual criticism is that I found this exciting fast paced novel rather petered out towards the end, with everyone being cosy and warm, and friends! PityWolf's Head (The Forest Lord)
A damned good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb!, 28 Aug 2013

I don't know how I came to have this novel, but I'm damned pleased I did. It was superb! Set in the 15thC, it not only involved a prostitute and a monk and a stolen painting, but also the artist Botticelli, the pope,Lorenzo de Medici and a whole host of others, but it was not in the least confusing. Humour flowed from the whore most of the time, whilst the monk was forever serious.
The sights, the sounds, the smells of Medieval Italy were all around,it was a great read, and so different from other historical fiction I have read.
