This had me holding my breath, as one accidental and awful event developed into true Noir. It made shivers go down my spine as the story unfolded, but it also had me fight back the tears. At one stage I wanted to hide!
A great story by a great writer, who has proved he can turn his pen successfully to any genré. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Family – a Mind-Game, or something even more sinister?, 26 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Aristo's Family (Kindle Edition)
Reading this book is like being invited into Aristo’s Family, although to be part of ‘the family’ in the story might not be something anyone in their right mind should even think of. Still, he goes visiting ‘the family’, when on archaeological digs, speaking of the day when his son, Pavlos, will finally be ready to meet the family. The answer to how and why – since Aristo has no other living family besides his son ( his own family having all been murdered and burned beyond recognition in the Turkish invasion of Cyprus), will become apparent as you read on (I can’t give it all away!).
The insight into fifteen year old Pavlos’ life is both strange and horrifying – while the somewhat grotesque contents of ‘The Museum’ scares the wits out of me as much as it messes with Pavlos’ mind, even though these innocent (presumably) archaeological remains should be nothing more than that- remains. Not so in this story. Expect to want to hide under the covers, chanting ‘na-na-na-na’ to stop the images descending on you as you read.
At the beginning of the book, I found the way Papas (Aristo) spoke soothingly and slowly, repeating words until Pavlos was completely calm, akin to a mother soothing a child. Since Pavlos’ mother had long since returned to the UK, comforting herself with the content of her bottles (why, you may ask!), perhaps Papas was attempting to be both mother and father. Sorely misled (cleverly so, by the writer), as The Voice becomes more and more sinister.
There are voyeuristic moments, insights into the mind of a young boy, almost man, giving in to being comforted – or sullied according to The Friends and The Family – by an older woman, Katherine, who Aristo himself had his eyes on as Pavlos’ future mother, leading to the need for ‘cleansing’, according to The Friends of the Museum (staff, who live in), and The Family. I was not prepared for that – or for worse, still to come! Katherine’s and Pavlos’ actions become central in the unfolding of events.
The Voice is a force throughout, playing mind-games, threatening, enticing... Pavlos fighting against it, and giving into it, all at once. But is Papas immune to The Voice? The Stavrovouni Museum is no place for a boy to grow up, but will Pavlos be able to leave? One day... and then the search for The Family – where will it lead him? And to what? And what has all the mid-games and hypnosis done to both son and father? Perhaps Suggestions and Gestures really should have stayed locked in Papas’ safe. But then, without it – how would Pavlos be able to find the answers he is unwittingly seeking?
This story is set in Cyprus, and the back-story is that of the Turkish invasion, and what happened when Aristo’s father swore at a Turkish soldier – but then – behind every story, there is another, and another. This is cleverly written, a psychological thriller, yet it’s a story which reminds you of the biblical ‘sins of the fathers’ – or indeed mothers... through the generations – and begs the question of what is carried through from generation to generation, untold, yet inherent – and the utter chaos it can cause, and the devastation within a family – and the... No, I will not reveal any more – read on: this story will have you hooked.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great little book, 16 Sept. 2014
A delightful story about Holly Prickles the hedgehog and her friends Sqiggle the Worm and George the Beetle, in their quest to find a dry, new home - and how they help one another, as well as others - and ultimately get help in an unexpected way. The book ends with activity pages to set the child busy, answering questions (do you know what hedgehogs, worms and beetles eat?), colouring pages, and pages to draw the the three friends. A great little book, with lovely illustrations, and highly recommended. A treat for the little ones!

I thoroughly enjoyed Yvonne Marjot' s novel, from start to finish. Imbued with geological, geographical and historical knowledge, she has seamlessly woven this into Cas's life, making it a joy to read, while at the same time tackling difficult everyday issues - all the while keeping Cas's story alive and vibrant. Highly recommended.

In the age of reality TV this story is a refreshing behind-the-scenes take on what might well have been reality. It's up-to-date in its setting, language and time, with great characters, and the writer has drawn on history as part of the story with great effect. AND it made me chuckle several times. Highly recommended.
