This singing is unequalled today. Check the synopsis or read the libretto online because is is at best sketchy in this CD. Still, the singing is enchanting, mesmerizing etc...and therefore deserves 5 stars or more. A fascinating piece of German romanticism, perfectly sung.

This is a bucolic piece in rural brittany of some century. 19th probably. Staging ans singing (soprano) are definitely fabulous (and that's understated) and if only for that buy it. I did not give it 5 stars because I find the plot a bit simple, I am french and I find the story totally outdated. It remembers me those country tales we use to read when we were young. I am not 10 y.o anymore :)

Et mari! ou bien est-ce: marri ?
We all thought of Pavarotti while listening to the end of this act and I guess poor Juan Diego Florez knew perfectly well he had to match up or do something so different nobody would complain.
In my opinion he sort of made it similar and unfortunately his fear of failing DID show.
Nathalie Dessay is wonderfull, jumps, laughs makes us smile and steals the show.
For J. D. Florez at his best I Puritani is a much better performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe there is a castle called Monsalvat after all? I wish there was :-) Lohengriiin here I am!!!, 21 Sep 2013

Harteros and Kaufmann slowly build up a tension, an extase to see it all collapse in less than a tenth of a second. And it is wonderfully beautiful, believable and dramatically desesperate. I never felt so intensely sorry for 2 characters in an opera. Marvellous Wagner!
Of course one may complain the swan is a bit laughable (some trick makes it cry litres of something...really?) and that Lohengrin's silver armour is sublimated in 2 shiny stripes on the sides of his tracksuit trousers, yes, I am not joking. Lohengrin. Wearing tracksuit trousers...
One may argue I don't understand how a younger audience may feel closer to these 2 characters mainly because the setting is somewhat contemporaneous of today's life. And maybe they are right. And for the better, because in no way this staging, as modern as it is with its Ikea house, brings down any shade at all on the shining emotions and utter beauty of the singing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Such a sad story in a France seen by americains., 21 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Staging: this Paris may be what americains soldiers may have seen of France's capital in the forties. Or is it really? To me it is an unsavoury mix of 50's fashion (some dresses are really pretty but if i had wanted a fashion show i wouldn't have bought an opera on DVD) some 60's fashion, some seedy and cheesy settings in the Hotel de Transylvanie and the worst ever curtain, all fake gold and half translucid...Vinyl, please...
Villazon has some golden moments, unfortunately they are ... moments. I was not impressed by his -ah, fuyez, douce image- in the slightest, his voice in totally uneven and there are notes that simply don't come out at all. I felt sorry because I bought this DVD to hear him before his misadventures took him off the best scenes and because yes I used to really like his "timbre" (timber/ tone ? in english?)
Ana Netrebko looks adorable though much older than the character she is supposed to be (16) and her honeyed tone takes us to heaven. Well...that's only if you're not a french speaker. Being one, i was sorely disappointed by the weakeness in pronounciation from both main singers.
Mr Des Grieux, father, is excellent as usual. Check him in Munich's Lohengrin with JK and Ana Harteros.
Overall, staging felt fake and aimed at an american audience (the one that has a stereotypical knowledge of historical Paris only, of course ;-) and the singing was mostly disappointing and so un-french.
This is a Paris for ignorant tourists and i wouldn't think any opera audience would fit that description. It is barely better than Broadway...it says a lot...
Manon was performed in Chicago in 2008 - Jonas Kaufmann and Nathalie Dessay- anybody knows how to get a copy of that?

5.0 out of 5 stars How could i have ignored this for so long??, 21 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Les Troyens is the most important oeuvre of french composer Hector Berlioz.
He is said to have been greatly influenced by Gluck whom had Salieri as a student and whose works influenced greatly Weber's and Wagner's. Being a fan of these I felt exhilarated by this work. It is not very often performed and, shame on me, i did not knew it.
This opera is poetic, epic and well served by a grand and respectfull staging. Nuit d'ivresse et d'extase will sweep you off your feet if you weren't already crying at the gandeur and noblesse of the Troyennes' sacrifice as greeks soldiers enter the city.
Voices: Ana Caterina Antonacci is a vibrant, passionate and of course desesperate Cassandre, she is at her best and yes you won't take your eyes out of her perfect figure.
Enee and Didon sing the most sensual duo, his voice nuanced and only powerfull where need be caressing and twirling around hers in a loving embrace. Fascinating.
This CD is an absolute buy.

This is Jonas Kaufmann best ever CD. You will be enchanted and surprised as his voice is this near perfection we have all searched for in his previous recordings. Stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars delicate and powerful, 6 Sep 2013

A great diversity in this cd enchants and convinces Mr Kaufmann is today's very best tenor.
I would have preferred 'Ruler of this Awful Hour' instead of 'I revel in hope and joy again' but I guess it may not have fitted in well as the 17th aria. A necessary and great buy even if one's owns already every other cd from this great artist.
