An average effort for a fantasy thriller, 21 Nov 2009
I think Abercrombie is certainly one of the better new writers out at the moment, though not a patch on Campbell or Erikson. I felt there was too much of a repeated formula here, and that ultimately left me unsatisfied. There isn't much to really care about in the characters, and I do like a good dark streak running through fantasy, but here there was just a sense of shallow depth, a rushed book. I'd give this a 3, but just wasn't convinced by the dialogue either.
