by Garth Nix
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars This is life-alteringly good., 18 Aug 2014
This review is from: Sabriel (Paperback)
This book was beyond amazing and inspired me to begin writing and take an interest in reading at the tender age of 11. Now i'm 20 years old and have read this book around 300 times over the last 9 years, it is fascinating, the epitome of gripping fantasy and literally obliterates all competition. I have yet to read a book or series that comes even close to the quality of these books.

The craft and talent Garth once again displays here is unbelievable. Here is a writer with unparalleled creative ability. Every idea is raw and original without being too "out there" that you would fail to relate to it, packed with a juicy sci-fi theme and steeped in technology but mixed with contemporary ideas of morality, humanity and the standard journey/change of the hero. Yet even this is done in such a way that sets it apart from other novels. Indeed if I was to complain I would say that this books limitation is that it is only one book, if it had been spread among two it would of been even more amazing. This book is on par with the Old Kingdom trilogy which are the best novels I've ever read.
This book will not let you down it is a work of brilliant creativity blended seamlessly with the emotional journey and development of the character. You will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars This entire series is brilliant but this one weakens slightly., 10 Feb 2013

The entire series is crammed with brilliance but that begins to wane by the third book. There are hundreds of moments when the main character should die or be beaten and he isn't simply because the antagonists seem to be void of a brain. That paired with the fact that the protagonist is so over-powered that much tension is lost as it's obvious he will blow away all his foes.
The main problem I had however was the lack of exploration of his morals, throughout the books the protagonist has a building ego and continuous to lose control of his powers throughout. The expectation is that this will build into the character questioning his ego and tactics and undergoing a change of some sort or leading to a hero's downfall, something that will prove that his arrogance (which has reached the point he is putting everyone's lives in danger) is not the way. Yet instead he is seemingly rewarded for this and he simply gains a ridiculous amount of power that goes beyond any form of explanation.
I found myself throughout this book hating the protagonist and hoping for someone to kill him. He never seems to accept the wisdom of his brother and only listens to himself and yet it is almost written as if this is a good thing.
The other two books are brilliant without a doubt and all are worth a read but I found my building dislike for the protagonist had reached unbearable levels.

The album before is apparently to be a far better one.

3.0 out of 5 stars You thought you've read a slow book? Give this a whirl, sorry I mean drag., 10 Feb 2013

The book possess quality that's for sure and potential but in the hands of a more experienced and talented writer this would of blown you away. Finally a book dedicated to the mysterious forerunners something many have wanted, and guess what? It'll let you down. The pacing is slow, very slow. This isn't the main problem, i found the writers particular style was not to my liking, I found that I often had an extremely long description of an area that they were only going to spend a couple of pages in yet it was only near the end of the book I understood how the main character looks. I don't know why he describes and explains things that don't matter and doesn't describe the things and people that do but it was't to my liking.
The story itself actually possesses considerable quality and is filled with great ideas despite it's slow pace it doesn't have many holes and everything is slowly revealed to you never giving away too much at once.
The description is also sometimes not very clear and I found myself flipping back and re-reading pages to understand what just happened. The ending though has a great deal of quality, mystery and tension although yet again it's dragged out a little too much that the tension begins to fade.
Yet despite this I'd say for those Forerunner curious people give it a read, but be warned don't expect the masterpiece it could of so easily been.

Halo: The Thursday War (Halo 2)

4.0 out of 5 stars An improvement on Glasslands but still lacking in pace and depth., 10 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Sometimes it can be long winded and sure knows how to drag at times however it certainly picks up in terms of action when compared to the preceding book. In the first book nothing that happened seemed to have any large implications until the end. This book however involves matters that will actually grasp your interest, as the events that transpire are on a far larger scale without losing track of the narrative. Both this book and it's predecessor cannot even dream of competing with the masterpiece "Ghosts of Onyx" which is starting book but this is a great addition to the Halo universe. However there are some problems as many characters from Glasslands simply vanish which is strange after the same writer just spent a whole book developing them. I was also disappointed as to the resolution of what happens to Catherine Halsey who is, perhaps the most intricate and complex character within the series she represents the conflict between doing what must be done and what is right. To have her simply squished out with very little mention was a major loss to the book, the fact that all the characters seemed to bear a mutual hatred towards her was somewhat surprising.
Instead all the one dimensional characters remain, but the writer attempts to add more depth to these characters and to a degree succeeds although certain drastic changes in characters personalities is still odd, Phillips the prime example.
Despite this though the book somehow managed to keep my attention with ease and I was not left disappointed at the end.

This is exactly what i'd expect from a halo book. Lots of action but with a story that develops throughout. Lesser writers would have sections for the story and other sections for action. A skilled writer blends the two with the knowing wink of the manicurist. This book will not let you down with tension and epic moments with a typical halo explosive ending perfectly leading the reader through to the ultimate climax and ending with a cliffhanger that answers as many questions as it raises.
