5.0 out of 5 stars A BOLD treat..., 26 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a film from the Philippines during the 80's bold era. These kind of films are notoriously hard to come by, considering the Philippines being quite a strict religious country most of the films from this era were banned and the negatives left and forgotten in sometimes not so well kept stores.
Mondo macarbro have done a great job in restoring this flick and its a real treat, but not for the faint hearted, as you might imagine.
The film stars Maria Isabel Lopez a former Miss Philippines and Sarsi Emmanuelle, who was an actress along with two others (Pepsi Paloma and Coca Nicolas) known as the soft drink beauties, who starred together in the films Naked Island and Snake Sisters, both of which are near impossible to view. Although there was news on Mondo Macabro releasing Snake Sisters this was quite a long time ago and nothing has emerged, and I read the negatives were quite badly damaged from poor storage which is a shame. Hopefully MM will be able to resurrect them the best they can. They always do an excellent job.
Silip is set in a small countryside village in Ilongo where life is still very much stuck in times past. People past the time by harvesting salt, farming, fishing and practicing religious beliefs. But where there is so called bliss lies temptation. This comes in the form of strong individual called Simon for the lady's of the village. Maria Isabel Lopez plays the teacher at the local church who fights her sexual desires for Simon in quite extreme methods resulting in the rest of the village thinking she is crazy. One day her childhood friend played by Sarsi Emmanuelle comes back home to the village after working in Manila, and rivalry for Simons desire begins resulting in an unforgettable climax.
This is a great movie although shocking and an extremely rare piece of cinema to be able to view. I personally can't thank Mondo Macabro enough.
If you're a fan of Japanese pink cinema you will love this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indonesian horror!!!, 30 July 2012
This review is from: Macabre [DVD] (DVD)
I have never seen an Indonesian film before, but am i sure glad i saw this one! Extremely gritty and gorey. Reminded me of a couple of french movies ive seen, Inside and Frontiers. Its on that level of terror and suspense if you have seen those two movies. Macabre starts off with friends drinking at bar. When leaving in their car a mysterious and beautiful young lady is standing in the middle of the road in the pouring rain. The friends decide to give the young lady a lift home as it is on their way. When arriving at her house she insists that that they should be repayed for their kindness. This is not the type of repaying i would like to receive! But it does make for some entertaining viewing! If you like your horror hardcore this is for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Creepy, 9 July 2012

Although not the best feature in the Tartan Asia Extreme catalouge, it is still a worthy contender. I dont understand the 1 star reviews, although i appreciate everybody is entitled to their own opinion. The only complaint i do have to make is in the film the shoes are not red! They are pink!!! Apart from this minor mistakei found The Red Shoes very atmospheric and incredibly creepy. Its more of a poetic horror than an in your face gore fest, but still has its blood soaked horror moments, and some quite trippy ghostly like dream sequences. All in all a good asian horror flick from South Korea following the trends of the films like "Koma" and "Into the Mirror".

5.0 out of 5 stars Prodigy Of MOBB DEEP...., 28 Mar. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Return of the Mac (Audio CD)
Some people are clearly confused of who Prodigy is... Prodigy is of course one half of the rap duo The Infamous Mobb Deep, and not Liam Howlett's Prodigy! So for you people who are slagging off someone your not really familiar with, your foolish and make yourselfs sound stupid. Prodigy has been an underground legend in the hip hop world with his partner Havoc for over 15 years now, creating critically acclaimed albums such as "The Infamous", "Hell On Earth", "Murda Muzik", "Infamy" and his last solo effort "H.N.I.C" which won him a lrycist of the year award with the Source magazine.
Anyway back to the point. After hearing their latest album "Blood Money" i thought the once gritty street life telling mc that was once one of the most vicious lyrically potent rappers, had fallen off big time. But after hearing "Return Of The Mac" i can still see there is some of this rapper still remaining in Prodigy. Espicially on tracks "New York (...)", "7th Heaven", "Bang On 'Em", the soulful "Stuck On You" and "Mac 10 Handle" of which the video is one of the most original i've ever seen (check it out!!!). Alchemist has produced the entire album which sounds great with samples your sure to recognise from all parts of the music and even the film world creating a kind of back to the early 90's rap music world. Which c'mon lets face it was when hip hop was at its best!
All in all i think Prodigy has made a good album here, and could go down as another classic he helped to create from back in his past. Like his last solo album and previous Mobb Deep albums. Although he might not be the lrycist from the darkside he once was. He's well on the way to putting right the mistakes he made with "Blood Money" and getting back on track!
