4.0 out of 5 stars nice and big, 6 Nov. 2014

Pros of this litter box: nice and big. The cats don't get stuck in it. Easy to clean. When something truly horrible happens, or when the litter kicks up a bunch of dust, the fan takes care of it nicely. Cons of this litter box: the fan is loud and noisy. The cats won't go near it if the fan's running, and it's irritating to me, too. The net effect is that it's not possible to run the fan all the time. Instead I run it only when absolutely necessary, reducing the potential odour reduction effect. Which is too bad, since that's why I bought it in the first place.

This was easy to put together (took about 5 minutes) and wedge into the sort of oddly narrow door of my wardrobe and then expand. Very sturdy and no complaints so far.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you want to take pictures, this is not the right one., 6 Nov. 2014

This did the job of protecting my phone, but the thick pink foam at the back of the case gave all my photos a rose-tinted view of the world. Having to wrestle the phone out of the case every time I wanted to take a picture was kind of a pain.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a good pocket dictionary, 6 Nov. 2014

This is a good pocket dictionary, but it is quite small and basic. It does have noun genders, but it classifies them as common/neuter/masculine instead of the more traditional feminine/neuter/masculine. It's got a handy mini grammar section at the back, including conjugations of some commonly used irregular verbs. I use it for reading while traveling, but do sometimes come up short on the vocabulary even at an intermediate level. If what you need is a quick reference or travel dictionary, this is a good choice.

Norse Clothing Patterns: Reconstructions of Viking Garments from Greeland

4.0 out of 5 stars it's much more useful than that, 6 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book contains patterns reconstructed from grave finds in Greenland, mostly for men's tunics and trousers as well as a few small pieces such as liripipe hoods. However, it's much more useful than that. It also has notes on fibres, weaves and spinning techniques, dyes, fasteners - basically everything you would need to actually recreate the garments. This would probably be of most interest to the serious re-enactor or museum conservationist.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a really great solution to the problem of too many herbal bags, 6 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a really great solution to the problem of too many herbal bags. I've gone from a dozen boxes on the countertop to two boxes of overflow in the cupboard. It looks neat and tidy and I can actually see what I've got! The trays come off the stand, so you can load them easily. They fit a standard size tea bag (Lipton, Pukka, and Clipper all fit just fine). If you fill up the tray and then interleave more bags upside down, it's easy to get 12-15 bags in each of the trays. It's extremely sturdy and looks good on the countertop. Well worth it.

The Private Abuse of the Public Interest: Market Myths and Policy Muddles (Chicago Studies in American Politics)
The Private Abuse of the Public Interest: Market Myths and Policy Muddles (Chicago Studies in American Politics)
by Ld Brown
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £7.32

5.0 out of 5 stars The perils of privatisation, 11 Feb. 2013
This book is a well researched castigation of the use of market strategies in provision of public goods (focused on health care, education, and transportation) in the United States. It clearly details how the use of market strategies in these areas was built on insecure economic theory foundations and faulty logic, how it has failed, and how political interests keep trying to introduce even further reforms to make it work. Most importantly, it shows how the introduction of market competition in these areas has actually resulted in more government involvement and expenditure than before, rather than less. Interesting for anyone that's looking at the interaction between politics and economics.

Mangoes and Curry Leaves: Culinary Travels Through the Great Subcontinent
Mangoes and Curry Leaves: Culinary Travels Through the Great Subcontinent
by Jeffrey Alford
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars beautifully illustrated book of food from across the Indian sub-continent, 11 Feb. 2013
This is a big, beautifully illustrated book of food from across the Indian sub-continent. I hesitate to call it a cookbook, since it's actually more of a food history and ethnography, although it does have recipes. The photography is beautiful, and the recipes (which it does have) sound delicious. The main problem is the book's size and heft - it's the size of a large coffee table book, which makes it not terribly easy to actually take into the kitchen to cook from. It's a strange sort of in-between book.

Provo : Amsterdam's Anarchist Revolt
Provo : Amsterdam's Anarchist Revolt
by Richard Kempton
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting bit of anarchist history, 11 Feb. 2013
The Provo movement, little known in the English speaking world, was a 1960s anarchist movement that, from 1965 to 1967, created chaos in Amsterdam and the surrounding towns and cities of the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium. Kempton offers a straight-up historical account of the movement from its inception to its disbanding, providing a sympathetic view into the actions, police battles, and publications of the group. In a series of very useful appendices, he offers information on the philosophical, historical, and artistic origins of the group, as well as a highly enthusiastic critique of another recent work on the movement. Kempton does not provide a full understanding of the movement; many of its leaders, except for its "prophet" Grootweld, remain more of less ciphers. In particular, very little is said about Irene Donner-Van Wettering, one of the pioneers of the Netherlands family planning movements, an ardent feminist, and one of the few Provos to be elected to a government post. It is, however, a brief book, on a subject that is only rarely taken seriously in the English speaking press. If you are interested in new social movements or anarchy, it's a good choice, and one of the few works available on the subject in English, which makes it an even better choice if you don't read Dutch.

Easy French Step-by-Step
Easy French Step-by-Step
by Myrna Bell Rochester
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.51

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful for beginners, 11 Feb. 2013
This book does exactly what it says - steps you though basic grammar, vocabulary and usage of introductory French, in a way that is engaging and won't lose you. It isn't classroom-dependent and is self-contained, which makes it good for self-directed learning, but it would also be useful for students hoping to supplement their French learning.
