Marvellous read, real page turner, 21 Sep 2010
This is one of those books you just keep on reading to see what's next. its not an exciting book as such, but there's a lot going on and the complex weaving of different people's lives and activities make the book compelling and a great read. The conditions and brutality of the Nazi regime are described more than many texts I have read before and quite frankly I wouldn't want any more detail. There is plenty of misery in the book, but it seems balanced rather than dramatic. One of the most impressive things about this book is the translation - it was originally written in German yet the English translation soon feels completely natural and as if this was the author's native pen. This is one of those books you read and breathe a sigh of relief at the end, not through a need to get to the end but as a phew, that was a powerful story. It was.
