4.0 out of 5 stars Classy romantic comedy., 19 Jan 2014
This review is from: Priceless [DVD] (2006) (DVD)
Amusing French film about a waiter who is mistaken for a rich guest by a female guest on the hunt for a wealthy sugar daddy. Various adventures result in him assuming the role of a gigilo by accident and eventually forging a tenuous relationship with the original guest , very amusing and worth watching. Don't worry if you don't understand french as it's easy to follow and the sub-titles are very easy to read. And Audrey Tautou is perfect in the role of the money grabbing sugar daddy hunter. I also like the way that unnecessary music is evident by its absence enabling you to enjoy the film more than similar Hollywood offerings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing value., 18 Jan 2014
I can't get over what good value this cable is, at just over 1 including postage (and it works perfectly) it must be the bargain of the century, I feel like buying more as they're so cheap, but what would I do with them !! So I'll just keep the one I have and marvel at how can they can do it so cheaply. I can't believe it when I see cables costing more than 50 and they don't do the job better!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good brush, 15 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Arrived on time and does what it's meant to and it's comfortable to use - pity the post cost nearly as much as the brush although it saves me going down to B & Q to buy one so I save on petrol.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy but likeable Chichlit, 15 Jan 2014
This review is from: Jessie Hearts NYC (Paperback)
A pleasing shortish story about Jessie and her friend who visit New York and stay with Jessie's playwright mother for the summer holidays , of course Jessie is just out of a relationship and a series of coincidences brings her into contact with a local boy Finn and you're kept guessing will they or won't they click. All very predictable but quite well written and enjoyable , I think the target readership is 15 - 25 year old girls but it's good enough for all to read ( I'm 63 and retired ). My wife bought it as her daughter has just returned from her first trip to New York to celebrate her 30th birthday and the writing gives you a good feel for the city. It's a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours but don't expect a literary masterpiece.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite involved - but very good, 13 Jan 2014
This review is from: Caught (Paperback)
I read this when it first came out in 2010 and had forgotten most of the plot so it was good to re-read it. It's mainly about Dan whose accused of paedophilia although he strongly denies it but the evidence is stacked against him there's also the matter of a missing girl and suspicion falls squarely on his shoulders. The sub-plot involving his old college colleagues adds another interesting twist to the tale and you need to be vigilant not to loose the plot , but if you manage it's an immensely satisfying read. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent novel about retirees, 11 Jan 2014
An excellent novel that's followed quite closely in the equally excellent if different film , various events are exorcised in the film especially Norman's fate ,the scenario in the book is blacker but still provides good reading. If you've not read the book I recommend it as it's different enough from the film to make it worth while and it's a good if bittersweet view of retirement and what's left for us when we look forward to maybe 30 years of fruitful life after paid work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting beautiful music., 10 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A haunting collection that merges into one seamless experience quite unlike much of his previous work , there are no disturbing crescendos to deflect the mood , it's the sort of music you need to sit down and relax to enjoy it fully. If you're feeling tense just sit down slip in the CD and enjoy unwinding.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK - but no nicotine so won't help with craving, 8 Jan 2014
As these cartridges contain no nicotine they'll be no use if you want to use them to give up smoking as you will always have the craving unless you are not addicted to nicotine - not likely. Much better to try ones with 1.5% or 2.0% nicotine and gradually lower the concentration.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good - but with reservations !!, 6 Jan 2014
This review is from: The Courage Tree (Kindle Edition)
Janine's young daughter Sophie who suffers from a terminal kidney disease doesn't return from her first trip camping with the brownies and the race is on to find her before she succumbs. There is also a sub-plot with Zoe an ageing film star who wants to save her own daughter from a life in the slammer and inevitably the two plots coincide at some point. My main gripe is that too many far fetched incidents happen and at the end you're left with the thought that it couldn't or wouldn't have happened without stretching the bounds of possibility to the extreme. It's a pleasing enough tale but it's based too much on wishful thinking and believability in a super herbal remedy " Herbalina" that's been discovered as the answer to kidney failure , there's hope and there's wishful thinking and I think this is closer to the latter. However having said that maybe there will be discoveries in nature that will prove valuable in medicine as my background in research chemistry has opened my mind to the likelihood that eventually we will find miracle cures in the most unlikely places - I hope !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shades of the Lord of the Flies, 5 Jan 2014
Very good but slightly anachronistic in style as the story appears to be set in the 1960s but is written in a style reminiscent of the beginning of the 20th Century. It shows that children and their emotions can be easily and tragically ignored by adults who seem to have lost the ability to empathise , believe and relate to their problems. When Charles Kingshaw ( aged 11 ) and his widowed mother move into "Warings" ( a victorian country house ) to be housekeeper to Edmund ( also aged 11 ) and his father the immediate hatred between the two boys, engineered by a jealous Edmund , can only lead to tragedy. Edmund's constant goading and bullying of Charles is ignored and disregarded by his mother and nothing Charles can do will prevent the inevitable outcome. Strong emotions are evoked and I expect most people can relate in some degree to the events and emotions portrayed in this excellent novel.
