Buy the trilogy. While Barbara Sleigh's writing style was at times a little 'long winded', these are great, magical stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Adopted, Fostered and Looked After Child needs you to read this...., 2 Jan. 2015

This book (and the subsequent volume) provide an effective model for parenting (and managing if a teacher) traumatised and attachment challenged children. Based on up to date neuroscience and most importantly focusing your contribution to the dance. A neat juxtaposition of traditional parenting ideas and inherited shoulds against the neuroscience.

These children are every adopted/fostered/Looked After child

1.0 out of 5 stars 'Based on an idea by...', 30 Dec. 2014
This review is from: Paddington [DVD] (DVD)
Don't go expecting the original.

Themes of rejection, loss and homelessness are to the fore in this movie. Paddington literally stands alone, the (very) little of the heart warming feeling of the original is left to the last scene. The children lack character: Mr Brown moves improbably from emotionless risk analyst (who consigns Paddington to the attics and is unaware of the consequences of his decisions) and a 50+ action hero: the redoubtable Mrs Bird is turned into a drunk. Paddington is consigned to a rubbish strewn attic in the Brown's Kensington & Chelsea millionaire's terrace and at one point is homeless walking the streets and sleeping on a park bench in the rain. Given the insertion of Kidmans psychopathic character, and the associated mocking emasculation Mr Curry I would say that this is ' based upon an idea by Michael Bond via the Paddington books', It seems a shame that the original work (unlike say 101 Dalmations seems to have been so little respected..

Price: £9.97

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Solutions for managing anger (and trauma) in the family, 15 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Firespitters (Paperback)
Gary Benton is a Behavioural Psychologist. He brings that expertise and his experience of working with traumatised children to this book where he explains what drives, and how to manage, challenging (particularly angry) behaviour in children.

Really importantly he puts you the adult into the picture, so you understand how you contribute to the dynamic and how you could change that contribution.

Particularly Useful for parents, (especially perhaps adoptive and foster) and teachers. The book provides theory and practical worksheets.

Go to http://allianceforchildwelfare.org/content/training-videos for the youtube presentations Gary has provided for Washington State's Fostering Programme.

Green Smoke
Green Smoke
by Rosemary Manning
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.39

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, gripping bed time stories, 30 Nov. 2012
This review is from: Green Smoke (Paperback)
This book is made up of a series of engaging chapters that each stand alone whilst being part of an overarching theme. We read it from start to finish over several nights as a bed time story but it will also make a good 'dip into' book. Aimed at 6-10 year olds(?)it is well written in accessible grammar and introduces us to some of the folklore of Cornwall (including the death of Arthur) in an age appropriate way via 2 highly sympathetic protagonists (Susan and R. Dragon). Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable achievement, 30 Nov. 2012
This review is from: Bogwoppit (Paperback)
This gripping adventure manages to tackle difficult topics with aplomb. An unloved 10 year old girl finds acceptance and family via rescuing a 'bogwoppit' - creatures that when untamed are quite unpleasant. Perhaps it's the unsentimental approach, and the depiction of the resilience of such children but the story manages to stay on the right side of believable - and has a happy ending.

2.0 out of 5 stars US culturally specific, 3 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The story of how a little girl adopted as a baby suddenly realises she is different physically from her adoptive parents is a good enough device. However, the cultural context is American and the 'why was I adopted?' question is answered from the context where birth mothers can and do arrange the adoption of children and sign contracts with the adopting parents. Quite a barrier for those adopted under other juristictions and for other reasons.
