2.0 out of 5 stars Tedious, 10 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I loved the first game, but this game consisted of many many cutscenes, and when you were allowed to actually play the game, you were paired up with someone who insisted on telling you what to do. Agency wasn't high on the agenda.

1.0 out of 5 stars Purely hand to hand combat, 25 Sept. 2013
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I didn't realise before I bought this game that it was totally hand to hand, button-bashing combat, which I found utterly tedious. For me, this was a game spoiler, although the visuals were great. I wish I could have played the game without the tedious combat and the multiple cut scenes.

Portobello

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and compulsive, 20 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Portobello (Paperback)
A gripping, character-driven suspense novel. I found the combination of the mundane - in the best sense of the word - and the mad very compelling, with Rendell displaying compassion toward her diverse characters. The novel explores addiction, mental illness, petty criminals in prose that is very simple and to the point, and that draws you further and further into the lives of these people, so that you really care what happens to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 7 Jun. 2011
This review is from: The Psychopath Test (Hardcover)
Ronson's subject matter - psychopaths - and his writing style - clear, uncluttered - make this book a fascinating, quick read. As others have noted, it's a pity it's such a short book, as it could have been twice the lenght and still keep your interest. Will definitely be reading his other books.

Catfish [DVD]
Catfish [DVD]
Dvd ~ Henry Joost
Price: £4.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting, creepy, moving, 23 May 2011
This review is from: Catfish [DVD] (DVD)
By turns suspenseful, creepy and very moving, this documentary/movie continuously undermines expectations and predictions about what is about to happen next.

2.0 out of 5 stars Down with the homies, 25 Jan. 2011
This review is from: PopCo (Paperback)
Scarlett Thomas is very very clever. And she wants you to know it. However, clever riffs on clever subjects aren't necessarily enough to sustain such a long novel. Plot and characters are also needed.... The narrator goes on and on about homeopathy, which is astonishing, considering that she is a clever person - too clever to see the absurdness of homepathy. Especially when one moment she is saying she has not needed to go to a doctor since she started taking magic water pills, and the next moment she is complaining of the colds, etc she constantly has! No wonder.... If you didn't like this book, don't worry, another book of hers, The End of Mr. Y, is riveting and mindbending in all the right ways.

2.0 out of 5 stars Historical Sci-fi, 13 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Galileo's Dream (Paperback)
I feel the same as many others about this book:

the historical parts of the novel do not meld with the science fictional parts.

that other than Galileo the characterisation is very bad.

that it is much too long.

It's Complicated [DVD] (2009)
It's Complicated [DVD] (2009)
Dvd ~ Meryl Streep

2.0 out of 5 stars It's not complicated, 29 Dec. 2010
Good points: some funny moments. Some touching moments.
Bad points: it is extremely long, and extremely plotless and extremely pointless. It is also very annoying that Streep's character has a vast multi-million dollar house, and yet she wants a huge extension built onto it. This part of the plot just seems so self-serving and narcassistic. Her children are also very annoying, with their constant hugging of each other and acting like they have just won the lottery.

The Holy Machine
The Holy Machine
by Chris Beckett
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-moving plot with characters you care about, 29 Dec. 2010
This review is from: The Holy Machine (Paperback)
I loved this book. It has all the things I enjoy in a book but rarely find together: an interesting, involving story, mind-bending, thought-provoking ideas, and characters you care about. It's a bit harrowing toward the end, and very moving. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly beautiful, 8 July 2010
This review is from: The Fountain [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
You know how you walk into a movie knowing you are going to see a variation on the same thing? Not with this film. It is achingly beautiful and profoundly moving and very unpredictable. Both leads are fantastic, and the special effects add to the story rather than lead it. The music is beautiful too, by Clint Mansell. It is also, of course, hugely romantic, but in a deeply non-romantic comedy way. I loved this film with both my heart and brain. It is for anyone who has ever been deeply in love, or who loves films that dare to be different, but aren't quirky or strange just for the sake of it. All the disparate stories tie together - this is a man moving heaven and earth and space and time to try to save the woman he loves.

And of course, it is also sad, tragically so.
