Tolkien and Beer, 18 Sep 2012
If you are a fan of J.R.R.Tolkien and want to find out a little bit more about the man, then this book by Edoardo Albert should satisfy your curiosity. The first two chapters are a chronological biography of Tolkiens life, further chapters reveal his literary life with fellow Oxford literati, C.S.Lewis among them. I for one was not aware of their relationship and found this very interesting. The book reveals that they both liked a pint or two and frequently met with others in a group called the "Inklings", discussing literature while downing a few beers.
This book primarily deals with Tolkien and his personal and academic life at Oxford, but within the text Albert eruditely points out quite a few interesting analogies between events and characters in Tolkiens life and events and characters within the Lord of the Rings.
A very well researched and easy to read effort and well worth the cost (less than a pint of beer). Saying that, this volume could easily be used as a reference for a Tolkien inspired Oxford pub crawl, all J.R.R.Tolkiens favourite watering holes are listed.
