Boring. Uninvolving. Incredible. Waste of good talent. Good cinematography. Sides of Paris not normally on tourist trail. Better ways of spending an evening.

4.0 out of 5 stars France Outre Mere, 14 May 2014
This review is from: Rebellion (DVD)
For reasons which become obvious during the course of this film, based on an actual incident in New Caledonia, this is a nasty bit of recent colonial history which is little known. A naive and botched rebellion attempt by indigenous Kanak is ruthlessly suppressed by French forces, not least because it coincides with the run up to the French presidential election. The protagonist is a negotiator whose work is undermined by metropolitan political interests, and the result is betrayal of the trust which he had tenously established with one of the Kanak leaders, as well as their slaughter at the hands of the French forces. New Caledonia is a major source of nickel. it is a French territory, so law and order is in the hands of the gendarmes, and involving the army is improper and is equivalent to callilng out the army to a conflict in Metropolitan France. However, the political and economic interests involved tend to take priority when a rebellion such as this one occurs. My main criticism of the film is the limited involvement the viewer is able to achieve with the main characters, so that the film has something of the detachment of a news report or documentary. Even so, it remains a salutary reminder that indigenous interests tend universally to be sacrificed to metropolitan economic and political interests, even in the nation that values equality, fraternity and justice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the full monty, 16 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ok for data but no good for power transfer so still have to make separate arrangements for charging. Very light weight useful for travelling, but makes it difficult to place neatly on flat surface. Neat mac-like appearance. Does about 75% of what I wanted.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decline and rise, 17 Mar 2013
A parable of the decline of American competitiveness in the face of the rise of Chinese manufacturing prowess interwoven with the personal decline of a middle aged American salesman in Saudi Arabia to clinch a deal with the King. The contradictions and frustrations of contemporary SA are revealed through a number of Saudi characters, while the difficulties of working in an alien context are well depicted. Ultimately, the protagonist and his company are mere pawns and whatever 'special relationship' might exist between the USA and the Saudi state are worth nothing when the Chinese can offer a better deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big theme, small print, 11 Mar 2013

Judt provides a comprehensive but penetrating account of postwar Europe. There is, however, a health warning: the print in this paper back version is minute, making it very difficult to read. Much better to buy the Kindle version, which can be read in comfort. It's almost worth buying a Kindle to read this outstanding history.

3.0 out of 5 stars A garden of beauty, cruelty & poignancy, 21 Feb 2013
A poignant story revealing the chasms of misunderstanding separating competing forces in the aftermath of 9/11 in NW Pakistan and Afghanistan. Aslam takes the reader into the minds of his characters while also providing a narrative of adventure story like action. At times there are passages of poetic beauty and tenderness, at others depiction of brutality and cruelty to make a sensitive reader wince, while at yet others there are accounts of dreadful actions driven by a frightening faith and righteousness augmented by ignorance -- on both sides of the chasm. Ultimately, there is a resolution which invokes the resilience of the human spirit and shared humanity. This is a novel that I am very glad to have read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not fit 4 purpose, 25 Dec 2012
This is a useless device. It doesn't fit any of the wine bottles we pour from and it doesn't so much pour as dribble in a most unpleasant manner. Anyway, why bother with such a device? Spend your money on a modest bottle of wine instead!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz as chamber music, 24 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Well (Audio CD)
I'm relieved to discover that I am not alone in being disappointed in Restored, Returned, in which the vocals were a subtraction from the instrumental purity of the TG ensemble. The Well is truly a return to form, with the subtlety and intelligence that is a mark of a fine chamber ensemble, be it classical or jazz. The Well is a recording to savour -- and celebrate.
