2.0 out of 5 stars durable but useless, 4 Oct 2013

I purchased these for use in a binder along with some poly pockets. unfortunately, the dividers aren't actually wide enough, so when used with the poly pockets, you can't actually see where the dividers are.

they would work if just used with paper that had been hole-punched, but along with poly pockets they are a complete waste of time.

this is unfortunate that this wasn't taken into consideration when they were made, as they are really durable and would have been perfect if it wasn't for this.

the other issue is that, because even the bits that are meant to stick out as polypropylene, you cant actually write on them. it does come with a page you can put at the front to write what each colour represents, but it would be better if you could actually write on the dividers themselves.

Thirteen Reasons Why
Thirteen Reasons Why
by Jay Asher
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.03

3.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable but not believable, 27 Oct 2012
This review is from: Thirteen Reasons Why (Paperback)
i was really looking forward to reading this book, because the format it was written in really intrigued me, a mix between Clay's point of view and the story being told from the point of view of Hannah, who recently committed suicide.

The way the book was written was great, and i loved the fact that the dead girl spoke to clay and all those others who hurt her and caused her to commit suicide through tapes, telling each her story.

However, the thing that really got me in this book was that the reasons she killed herself for, in my eyes, weren't really strong enough to warrant suicide. As someone who has thought seriously about suicide (due to bullying, depression, illness, disability etc) i know how it feels to be in the position where you feel there is nothing left for you. But in reading Hannah's story, i just didn't get that. Her reasons seemed like a spoilt girl not getting exactly what she wanted, overreacting to things and eventually killing herself.

SPOILER WARNING!
though a minor one. the only reason i really felt she was justified in her state of depression was witnessing the rape of one of the girls she goes to school with at a party. but even then, it wasn't her it happened to. If it was her, I'd get it. but it wasn't. Okay, the guilt of not owning up would be hard to bear, but if it comes to a choice between killing yourself over not telling someone what you'd seen or telling someone, you tell someone.

SPOILER END!

basically, despite this character, who i should have been completely sympathetic with, i just wanted to tell her to get over it. I would never say this to someone who i felt had real reason to want to kill themselves, it's not something you can just 'get over' but in this case...wow... it was only a few rumours, i've suffered worse rumours than she did! and a few people doing some nasty things to her.

i get the feeling that the author, despite his saying that he had a friend who tried to kill themselves, really didn't understand what it is to be completely hopeless, in such a state of despair that you feel you have nothing else left, and because of this, they character of hannah just seems to not have enough bad happening to her to warrant her suicide.

I don't mean to completely insult this book, because like i mentioned at the start, the format of the book was fantastic, and i loved the fact she mapped out the places that meant most to her, in relation to leading to her suicide. and I am glad that in the end MORE SPOILERS Clay realises that there is something wrong with Skye and tries to go and help her. to save her like he couldn't save hannah.

all in all, decent read, good book despite the unrealistic characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars utterly creepy!, 11 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
as a fan of darren shan, barry hutchison etc i thought i would give this a try. i loved the first book in the series, it hooked me right away and kept me reading until the end without putting the book down. this one i found just as creepy, and it really made you feel terrified and creeped out. in this installment we start to learn more about why these terrifying creatures are coming after the kids.
however, there is disappointing news about this series! after the release date for book 3 passed with no book appearing but no change in the date (i was desperate to read the next!) i contacted the publisher. and as of when they told me, there is going to be no more books published from this series.
i do hope this changes, because this series has so much potential and is utterly brilliant! i hope they reconsider, as i'm desperate to read the next one!

3.0 out of 5 stars alright, 11 July 2012

i was looking for a new bookend and thought this looked like it's be good. however, because of the way it sits when folded out, it actually takes up quite a bit of space on the shelf. I have limited shelf space and really needed something that'd take up the minimum space. it does slide under the books at the end to hold it up, so i think it could easily have been designed without the extra plastic taking up space at the side. they are also pretty expensive considering you only get 1 bookend, and it's just made of plastic, but i guess it does the job.

I really enjoyed this book. it wasn't the best i've read, but all in all an excellent story.

Set in Ireland, we follow a young girl who discovers the secret of the Dublin Button factory. inside is the timecatcher, a strange vortex which only opens once every seven years, which shows you any day in time. It is guarded by the ghost of the man who accidentally opened the vortex several hundred years ago, but another ghost is determined to harness the powers of the timecatcher and use it for his own gain.

There is a lot to keep you reading in this book, lots of twists and turns. the characters aren't the best i've read, but still entertaining enough. there are several mysteries to this book that are really enticing, so it's worth a read!

I loved this book, it grabs your attention right from the start and just keeps you hanging on. I read this in one go as I couldn't bear to put it down.

the characters in this story were brilliant, I really liked the main characters, Blaise, Sunni and Dean, which is unusual for me and a young adult book, the bad guy, Angus, was great, he was so two-faced and deceptive, you never knew what he was going to do next. What i really liked about this book were the other characters, ones that it wasn't entirely clear whose side they were on, whether they would help the children, whether they would keep helping them or turn them over.

The best thing about this book was the paintings. The descriptions were great, but it really made you want to visit the land of Arcadia, to see all the mystical things within it. the backstory about Corvo leant a brilliant edge to this magical tale.

I immediately ordered the next in the series, The Crimson Shard, because I just loved this book so much! well worth the read!

3.0 out of 5 stars not what i expected, 5 Jan 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dark Angels (Paperback)
I was a bit disappointed by this story, because from the title and description, it seems like it would be a really scary story. in the end, i only read half of the book. By halfway through, very little had happened and there didn't seem to be much going on at all. I wasn't that interested in the characters either, they were a bit dull and didn't have much about them that was interesting. it was a shame, because it seemed like this would be really excellent.

Part of the problem could have been that I have read a lot of young adult books recently, and most of them have been brilliant, hooking you right from the start, whereas this one didn't seem to be going anywhere.

all in all, disappointing. the characters weren't particularly interesting, the story wasn't as scary or mystical as it described it to be. perhaps if i'd managed to read the 2nd half, I would change my mind, but it just wasn't good enough to keep me reading.

It wasn't until recently that i started using a diary, but i desperately needed one. last year, I came across these tiny moleskin diaries, which are the perfect size for sticking in a handbag or pocket. they hardly take up any space, but have loads of space inside for dates and notes. Great for someone like me who doesn't need a huge desk diary, but only wants a little one for quick notes. brilliant!

Oh how i love a good YA horror! and this is one of the best!

I've now read the whole series, The dead, the dark and the damned, and wow was i impressed!

In this book, we following Lazarus and co. as Hell finally breaks through to earth, and only Lazarus can stop it.

this whole book was full of suspense, it kept me awake at night reading it. The descriptions of the Dead are just as creepy in this book as they ever were, and the story was just fantastic! it's a hard book to review without giving away key plot points that would ruin the book, so I will just say:

amazing book, amazing series, and well worth your time to read it! I loved it and will be reading again and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing!, 20 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the best books i've read in a long time, I was totally hooked. I loved the first book in the series, The Crowfield Curse, and had to get my hands on this one too!

things in this book get even creepier and unnerving than they were in Curse, there is something that is threatening to destroy the monks home, and everything they do to stop it seems to make things worse. The demon behind all of this quickly makes itself known to Will, and it is one scary demon. It's apperance may not have been that scary, but the way it follows him around and appears out of no where really creeped me out. this whole book had a wonderfully spooky atmosphere to it, and kept me hooked til the end.

from the end of this book, it suggests there will be more books so come, and certainly hope there are, because this series is just amazing!

highly recommended. best to read the crowfield curse before reading Demon, but i can't imagine you would be disappointed!
