A gem of a movie about quiet places and insight far from the madding crowd and the commercialization of life. A treasure.

A fast paced thriller that never lets up. A real page turner and the characters are quite believable. Does not disappoint.

As good as The Sopranos or The Wire. Tough and gritty with believable characters and brilliantly acted. Tom Vaughan Lalor as Nidge is superb.

A very engaging read that holds a mirror up to modern America and gives cameos of certain individuals that provides an insight into the unwinding. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been great, 8 Mar 2012
This review is from: Capital (Hardcover)
Having read this author's book "Whoops" on the financial crisis I bought Capital with the expectation of gaining more insight into the machinations of banks and bankers. It's a disappointment from this point of view. It's actually a story about a street and the characters who live or visit there. For me there are too many characters. You get sort-of interested in one of them and then they disappear for a few chapters. The characters don't really interact and are bound together through the device of them all receiving weird messages saying "We want what you have." This device, although interesting, eventually leads nowhere.
The banker character and his spending-crazy wife are not fleshed out enough or given enough space. They are essentially characterless and you don't like them or hate them. In fact I didn't really care about most of the characters in the book. There is a Polish Builder, an attractive nanny, an asylum seeker, a policeman, a football prodigy and a young Muslim who visits Islamic sites and draws the attention of the security services. I found him to be the most interesting character and his incarceration to be the best part of the book.
Would I recommend it? Yes I would. It is a really good, but not riveting, read and it does have something to say about the mores of modern society. Enjoyable but disappointing in the fact that it could have been great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Massive disappointment, 23 Feb 2008
This review is from: Atonement [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
I sat down to watch this film looking forward to something special having read all the hype. It was all I could do to see it through to the end. A load of pretenious twadle laced with sterotype brits. Nice photography is about all on the plus side.
Very missable I'm afraid.

Why do so many people believe this sort of rubbish when there are no facts to back any of it up?

The God Delusion

5.0 out of 5 stars Religon Exposed, 1 Nov 2006
This review is from: The God Delusion (Hardcover)
This book is a masterful examination and exposition of religion and the silly claims that it makes. I have always wondered about a god who supposedly wants us to believe in him and yet hides himself from us - chosing to speak to us in riddles threough some burning bush or holy man.

Dawkins is a great teacher of sicence and enlightened thought who brings the power of logic to his argument. One hopes that this book is widely read as there are untold millions out there who want to drag us back to a dark medieval world and extinguish the light of learing. If I was a believer I'd say - god bless Richard Dawkins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing Read, 28 Oct 2006
This review is from: Best and Edwards (Hardcover)
This is a rarity - an intellegent book about football. Every true football fan and - especially - every Manchester United fan should read it. As well as being about two of the greatest players the British game has produced it's about what has happened to the game - and indeed Britan itself - over the past fifty years. Although the book is about Edwards and Best the fulcrum around which it turns is actually Bobby Charlton. This book is written with intellegence and insight and is light years away from the normal fare served up to football followers. If you love and care about the British game then read this book. It's brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blown Away, 30 Jun 2004
This review is from: Live In Belfast (Audio CD)
I've never seen Brian Kennedy live but how I wish that I had been at this Belfast concert. This is a truly sensational performance by a truly gifted singer and performer. One minute you are up dancing and the next shedding a tear. So buy this album and listen to a master of emotional communication with the voice of angle. Those who miss this one miss something really special.
