I loved this novel. It was a walk back in time. This was a delightful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing teen book, 7 Feb. 2015

This is the kind of book young adults should read. Despite being a thriller, it really explores the complexity of coming of age and burgeoning sensuality. It is certainly not sensationalist, however exploring with subtlety the confused feelings and half understood emotions as the young narrator crosses into the adult world. Beautifully drawn. As an adult, I still loved it. It really captures that innocent age of the 1950s. A little like Swallows and Amazons for teens.

Whilst set against a complex political past, this is as much a story of love and betrayal as it is a story of war and conflict. An interesting read with exquisitely drawn characters. The most compelling moments are those set in the beautiful Kashmiri past. The characters there are far more finely drawn and intriguing than the main character of Max Ophuls or India/Kashmira, despite the large amount of the novel dedicated to them. As fine as Midnight's Children? No. Better than a lot of novels? Yes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flashes of greatness, 18 Dec. 2014

I feel traitorous giving this book such a low star scores: there are times when I found myself thinking the writing was magnificent, a genuine masterpiece that would stand through time. However, I found it dragged a towards the end - I was actually waiting for it to finish. The style was at times beautiful and deeply moving, with moments of genuine wisdom, but there were also times I just couldn't figure out who was who or what was what. The main characterisations - Henry, Ann Boleyn and of course Cromwell - were exquisitely drawn and I found them compelling, but some of the other characters became a blur at times. As this can be put down to my own failure - reading in a state of tiredness before bed - I would advise saving this for a holiday, when you can give it the attention it deserves and reap its full reward.

This is a genuinely delightful novel. I fell in love with the characters who were well-drawn, even when they were only minor characters. It's a well-paced novel, with tidy, episodic moments and easy to follow time jumps.

3.0 out of 5 stars imaginative concept not fully realised, 9 Nov. 2014

The world that this writer evokes is original and I enjoyed the inventiveness. The characterisation and the writing itself though lack the depth of the really great fantasy out there. An enjoyable read but a shame as there was a lot more potential.

An interesting book with some of the most unlikable characters ever. This was not an enjoyable book for that reason, but as a lesson in human cruelty, it is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a great book, 19 Oct. 2014
This review is from: The Diddakoi (Kindle Edition)
An outstanding book. Too many children's books now present a wonderful adventure, with very little in the way of themes. I read this a s achild and it stayed with me; even now I can remember bits of description, but, more importantly, I remember the lesson of understanding I received from it.

A great anti hero as a main character, one who's bad but with his own sense of honour. Enough plot twists to make it interesting.
