Nice to see these tunes get the hillbilly treatment, they stand up brilliantly, I guess cos they're such killer songs!
J Mercer has the gift for penning melodies that bite, and stick in your head.

Smiley smile is fantastic
Maybe not the greatest record ever, as was expected, but a brilliant, weird, transporting thing.
Better than the White album?

A sparkling album, from the days just before the neo-trads stomped in and spoiled everything. You've got a crack team of international musicians romping through a selection of tunes by the obscure and unrated Herbie Nichols. Obviously Monk-like, but brilliant tunes in their own right.
The solos are mostly short and to the point - the opposite of the sprawling free style these guys were usually doing - they sound like they're having fun.
And Steve Lacys tone is one of the great sounds of jazz!

Stone classic album, hadn't heard it for a while and seemed too good to miss at less than 2 quid for a download. Sadly, there's a reason for it's cheapness; the sound is just awful. I'm no audiophile, but this just sounds off-puttingly thin and brittle.
'Coltrane Jazz' issue from the same company has better sound.
