5.0 out of 5 stars One hell of a PIPRDREAM, 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Pipedream (Audio CD)
Alan Hull must be one of the greatest singer song writers that Britain has ever produced.
I bought this as an LP when it was first issued and played it so much that I wore it out. To call it a masterpiece is an understatement. Every track is a gem. To have to pick one as the best is almost impossible but if I had to, it would be Song For A Windmill, or maybe For The Bairns, or Country Gentle Mans Wife, but then again Drug song, I just can't choose really.
It's just a shame that the photo collection reproduced in this version are all in black and white, where they are in colour with the vinyl version. Many of the musicians are either from the original Lindisfarne or went on to join the new look Lindisfarne, and are very accomplished. You can almost feel the fun that they must have had in the studio when the recording was underway.
The album has been re-mastered and this I feel has been of benefit as you can really hear the quality that is there.
If you know Lindfisfarne's music then Alan will be well known to you, if you haven't take a chance and buy it, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 9 April 2013

Iain Rice is well known in the model railway field as both an author and model maker, and this has to be up there with the best of his books. This is well written with his usual wonderful touches of humour, that many of his readers will be familiar with. The book as a whole has some great ideas about how to model steam locomotives.
I particularly liked the chapter on improving R-T-R locomotives, even the ones that you would not think require improving. I also like the way he explains not just why he choses to improve a locomotive, but how, and in most cases with great detail, which does not leave you the reader, with further unanswered questions, like other books I have read have done.
Each chapter has clear and well chosen photographs, both of the prototype locomotive, or to demonstrate his modelling techniques being described in the text.
The chapter on what work each type of locomotive does is also well written and very informative, and I feel that this is an area which many new to the hobby would find of great interest.
I agree with what the other reviewer says about the references to his previous books, and I personally am glad that he has not repeated him self here, and would recommended these books too, especially the chassis construction one, it's well worth it! Although his books on Whitemetal, and Etched locomotive construction are also worth getting too!
All in all a great book, one that I found hard to put down, I have already read some chapters more than once.
