This thoughtful, slow-moving account of expatriates in Parisian 1920's, at 129 minutes, perhaps does require some stamina, but Ernest Hemingway's troubled characters are played by some top draw names of the time including, Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer and Errol Flynn, in a film-stealing performance. This was to be the last of Flynn's notable performances; one that mirrored the star in reality. Overall, this 1957 classic does boast beautiful colour, stunning scenery and an appropriately prominent musical score by Hugo Friedhofer. A worthwhile presentaton.

2.0 out of 5 stars Another Release Disappointment!, 10 May 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I think this is the third DVD release in the UK for Shout at the Devil. Unfortunately all three are of huge disappointment to fans of this film, as they are edited versions of around 115 minutes. Hopefully, one day, someone will do this classic adventure film justice by releasing the original 147 minutes version, which is long overdue. At this moment in time what we have is not unlike a few years back when the same versions were available on video. For a fuller print of this film, try catching this on the BBC. I recall their version running approximately 10 minutes longer.
**UPDATE** As of the 8th October 2013, Shout Factory, a U.S. company, has released the much anticipated full version of this film. Although stated as Region A, it is in fact, Region-Free. The picture quality is very good; the best i've seen for this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent little gem!!, 7 May 2007

Excellent little gem of a film that deserves to be better known. Adrien Brody plays a kidnapper who buries a rich man's wife for the ransom of $1 million. Having been caught he insists on talking only to the police officer, Maura Tierney, whom he sees responsible for his capture. With time running short,to save the buried woman, Tierney finds herself being drawn into Brody's twisted mind games. Adrien Brody is well cast and gives a memorable performance; Maura Tierney, i think, gives a simply magnificent performance as the officer with dark secrets of her own. I rate her performance among the best anyone's given in recent years.
