Suspense Written Right, 28 Mar 2011
When I first sat down with this anthology I only intended to read one or two stories before getting some work done. I thoroughly enjoyed "Unreasonable Doubt" by Max Allan Collins, so I took a peek at the next story. And the next.
After an hour and a half of "just-one-more," I'd read the entire anthology.
If you need an example of truth in advertising, Top Suspense will do the job! Each memorable story evokes a strong reaction, whether humor or horror, noir-weary despair or holy crap shock. Several work a combination and some of them manage all four. My reaction to the reveal in Ed Gorman's "The Baby Store" led the lady sitting next to me in the café to ask if I was all right (I wasn't sure).
There's something for every suspense fan in this anthology, from noir to crime to borderline horror. If you aren't particularly fond of the genre, this anthology might change your mind. It's a great introduction to suspense written right.
(Full Disclosure: I received a copy of this anthology in advance for review purposes)
