One of all time favourite childhood books, 9 Jun 2011
This is one of the most fantastic books for children/young teenagers. I must have read it for the first time when I was about 7 or 8, but I have completely lost track of the number of times I reread it over and over - in fact I have even picked it up a couple of times in the last couple of years (I'm now well into my 20s)! R Sutcliff somehow manages to capture the atmosphere of England in the 1500s, and of the nomadic life that travelling players lived. It is especially interesting I think for schoolchildren who might currently be studying the Elizabethan period in history, or Shakespeare, or really anything to do with the late Medieval period - as it will give them a real feeling for the quality of life in those times, and the way that people lived in order to support themselves. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone - adult or child - along with many of her other books!
