5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant, 15 Sep 2012
This review is from: Dark Water [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
I loved this movie, it is not big budget slasher or even truly scary yet i found it compelling and hard not to watch. It is a very quiet movie, subtle, pervasive and there is tension throughout. Mostly it's about the relationship between a mother and her daughter. They're down on their luck and she's trying to do the best she can for her kid, the suspense for me was whether or not the supernatural was real or whether the poor woman was loosing her mind. The ending had me in tears and it made me think.

If you've ever seen The game starring Michael douglas this is sort of the silly version of that, don't think about it too hard accept the premise and enjoy Bill Murray doing what he does best, bein' silly. Good fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars blech!, 22 Jun 2011
This review is from: Gambit [DVD] (DVD)
Oh my god, this movie is soooo slow, it should be slick it should be fast, it should be good but it isn't, I think it might be the worst movie I ever saw Shirley Maclaine in!
The only bit that was any good (possible spoiler) is when Shirley climbs into the display case and out again, remarkable bod, if it was hers.

4.0 out of 5 stars The good the bad and down right s*xy, 12 Nov 2007
If you like Dracula, vampires and anyhting gothic you will like this movie, however there are plenty of movies out there who do gothic better. To be fair though if you've ever read the book, you'll understand the nonsensical way the story plays out.
Its a bit childish and niave but the costumes are fabulous, the sexual parts are luscious and the scenery is lovely.
Winona does very well as Mina, I found her just believable enough turning from sweet and chaste to being seduced into a vampire lover. Keanu Reeves perhaps gave the worst performance of his career if they had replaced him with a cardboard cut out I think I would have barely noticed.
Anthony Hopkins camps (vamps?) it up delightfully, (he seems to be the only one having any fun), Mina's friend Lucy provides some juicy parts aswell ;)
The madhouse was a nice touch too, with the good doctor looking almost as mad a that silly old Renfield.
Anyway I've left the best to last Gary Oldman, he's not conventional by any means, but he makes Dracula, powerful, menacing, charming, (dare i say it panty peeling) sexy, intellectual, passionate, monstrous and touchingly vulnerable in his love and humanity. Driven by his love for Mina, he becomes if not forgivable at least understandable. And that deserves four stars all on its own, good on ya Gary.

3.0 out of 5 stars mmm he-man, 2 Oct 2007
Did anyone else ever notice that at the end of nearly each episode (or enough to make it a trend) Skeletor would say 'Ah He-man' and run away and everyone would just let him? Say something witty and then laugh?
And there were a lot of body builer type of guys in skimpy clothes with kinda wrestler names, was it just me or did it seem just a bit homoerotic/gay?
I enjoyed it tho, i thought it was funny as hell, and the cat was my favourite, tho Shera was a bit of goody goody pain in the rear.
He-man's hair was definetly girly, I realise its meant to be a medeival page boy look, but how would a five year old know that, and he wore pink :)
Not trying to diss the big guy (or his fluffy pants) just havin a bit of fun at his expense, and thats wat He-man's about anyway having fun :)
My favourite bit was (u know it, say it with me) 'I Have The Power!'

Glenn Close versus Annette Benning- Annette brings a softness and mischevious quality to the role, however to believe and accept her ostraciziation as just deserts Glenn Close's viscousness was brilliant. Annette plays a silly woman who uses people and Glenn Close plays a very intelligent, exacting, cruel and lovely predator

Colin Firth versus John Malkovich? I like Colin I think he's really sweet and lovely, and he was more a fop then a calculating driven hunter. Plus his 'prey' in Meg Tilly and that very young girl who plays Cecile she looks thirteen! (Uma looks about sixteen or so at the least, mind u back then as long as the girl was having her period she was considered a woman) are just too easy.

I beleived in Michelle Pfeifer's moral fibre but Meg Tilly is a raving irrational push over.

John Malkovich is strong, seductive and in his own way noble, Colin played a silly young man playing with silly women/girls.

An interesting difference between this movie and Dangerous Liaisons, was this one they spoke french it didn't add much, and young Cecile keeps the baby and we meet her husband to be.

This one could be interesting to watch in how Dangerous Liaisons could have gone wrong, its an allright movie but Dangerous Liaisons is so much better.
