5.0 out of 5 stars A secret case study of the heart, 16 April 2014

I found this book sophisticated in its story telling, intimacy and accuracy. It is structured beautifully, one chapter per 'encounter,' portraying such an honesty of feeling and sensitivity of emotion that it was almost a comfort to read. For anyone on the quiet side of life, this book is rich to share about experience of love, life and relationships. It was a pleasure to read and I think it is an honour that someone can write so frankly and openly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource, 3 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Working on the basis that trauma disconnects a person with their body, Levine proposes a series of twelve simple exercises to carry out to 'reconnect' and heal trauma. With plenty of supporting information at the beginning, the book feels to the reader who has suffered from trauma - understanding, encouraging and reassuring. This will be a valuable resource to anyone in the process of healing from past trauma, both physical and emotional, when psychological methods can be too heavily based on the mind and thinking. I am glad to have found this book, simple and small enough to carry around with practical solutions to panic. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brave, Important, Unique, 2 Aug 2012

This review is from: Psychiatric Tales (Hardcover)
This book is brave, important and unique. In an accessible and intelligent style, it gives an insight into an area of our society which is little explored; little represented in contemporary film, literature and documentary. I think it could be a valuable resource for anyone wanting to know more about the experience of mental illness, and unpicks the complex subject in a digestible way. Having suffered from psychosis myself, I can relate to many things in the book and feel it is brave to portray these issues in such clarity. Interesting section of self harm as a coping mechanism - it made me ask the question, what purpose do the highs and lows of mania and delusions of psychosis serve for the person experiencing them? Thank you for a brave, intelligent book.

Slow moving but subtle, I didn't get to the end of the film but I think it was a powerful exploration of interpersonal relationships against the back drop of a changing China.

I would have liked a bit more information for the prelude to my visit, including literature arts etc etc. However, nonetheless very useful. Can see some of the info will become outdated with recent events in the country! :-D

Sacks writes with respect and great insight for his case studies, and each character in this book brings to life a multitude of examples of lives beyond our own. It is celebration of the extraordinary and written in a superb style. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp Shaw, 31 Mar 2012

This review is from: Straight Ahead (Paperback)
Clare Shaw's choppy, sharp interpretations of the landscapes of human emotion, relations and life are superb. Particulary strong are poems outlining her experiences of staying on a psychiatric ward; personal, contemporary insights of such experiences and not only valuable but rare. Her language and works explores the everyday, to the more gross boudaries of human experience. I really enjoyed the book, only wish for more.

Dipping in and out of this book is a pleasure. Reading literary delights by famous figures from the past is a beautiful treat. It is an exploration of the human capacity to love and express love as well as giving a more personal insight into histories' greatest romances and tales. It also explores language used at its very best, written in moments which conjure the imagination wildy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 13 Feb 2011

This is an interesting album in its own right. Inside the sleeve you can see the original artwork from the album, including a drawing of the Cane Hill Asylum that Bowie's brother spent time in, and sadly died after he left. His song - All the Madmen - is really worth a listen an amazing and very personal comment on the asylum system. The Width of a Circle is a sophisticated track and I feel these two songs alone outshine the well known title track 'Man Who Sold the World'. Order this through the post for yourself and you will feel like a child at Xmas time....
