5.0 out of 5 stars Stark and compelling, 24 Feb. 2013

More stark and compelling classical work from John Zorn. Avant Garde melds with world music with a dash of free jazz to show off Zorn's unique genius. A must-have for all Zornists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ambient Minimalism, 24 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Minimalism from the ambient end of the spectrum (a la Gavin Bryars, who appropriately appears as a member of the performing ensemble here) from Jon Gibson, one of the founder members of The Philip Glass Ensemble and early collaborator with Steve Reich and Terry Riley. Field recordings meld with shimmering, droning tonal acoustic and electronic instrumentation.

Gibson is egregiously underrepresented as a composer on disc (this release with its companion disc, 'Two Solo Pieces', also originally recorded on Philip Glass's first established label, Chatham Square, one late 70s recording put out later on John Zorn's Tzadik, and one 90s release mixing Gibson as composer and performer of other leading minimalists on Glass's Point Musc label), but is and remains an underestimated force amongst the original American minimalists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bleak and relentless, 8 Feb. 2013

Bleak and relentless - this represents some of Crumb's best music. Black Angels (familiar from 'The Exorcist') alone is worth the purchase, a classic of the modern canon, terrifyingly compelling and utterly unique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angular minimalism, 8 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Freedom In Fragments (Audio CD)
Reminiscent of the angular minimalism of the European school a la Louis Andriessen and Gavin Bryars. Spiky, relentless and alternatingly tonal and atonal - this is at the very apogee of repetitive music.

Zorn blends Avant Garde classicism, minimalism, ambient, rock, jazz and horror soundtrack scoring - all to dizzying effect. Scored for the stage, this better than most of his film works output, and another must-have for all die-hard Zornists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zorn is unique, 7 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Femina (Audio CD)
One of Zorn's best recent works. Melding his trademark angular Avant Garde classicism with his sometime minimalism tonality, Zorn serves up a heady cocktail - spiky, evocative and downright beautiful. All this and exceptionally beautiful disc packaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Minimalism, 7 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Technology Of Tears (Audio CD)
Existing somewhere between the wild eclecticism of John Zorn and the tonal, repetitive beauty of Philip Glass there exists Fred Frith. This piece for a dancework by Twyla Tharp, Is perhaps Frith's most minimalist work. Stark, repetitive and compulsive - this work of feverish New Music underlines Frith's genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extreme-ly, brutally beautiful, 3 Feb. 2013
This review is from: Art of Memory (Audio CD)
A work of genius by the twin masters of the Avant Garde - this is extreme stuff and not for the faint of heart. Zorn and Frith rip up the rule book and lay down tracks of blissful brutality. Stark, harsh and transcendent - try this if you dare.

Is it ambient? Is it rock? Is it avantgarde? Is it minimalism? This work of genius is all this and more. Composed in 1974, this is groundbreaking stuff and a must have for all new music fans. Incredible.

Another work of genius from Zorn and Frith, the twin masters of the Avant Garde. Brutal, beautiful and not to be missed for fans of the extreme, this work of classic grandeur stands up alongside the best work of either composer/performer - try this if you dare.
