The Third Bullet (Bob Lee Swagger Novels)
The Third Bullet (Bob Lee Swagger Novels)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Hunter's best, 18 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hunter's finest novel in some time harks back thematically and dramatically to his early classic, 'Point of Impact', and ranks among the finest Kennedy assassination novels, such as DeLillo's 'Libra'. Not as action-packed as some Hunter tomes, but redolent with tension and the emotionally-laden pathos not seen since 'Black Light'.

Hunter is and remains the genius savant of intelligent action-thrillers - and a great writer to-boot.

An essential Zorn release, this features the compelling aggression a la Naked City, and must rate among the eclectic composer's finest releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monkish Minimalism, 24 Jun. 2013
Beautiful, lush and compelling, this is reminiscent of the vocal Minimalism of Meredith Monk, and is not only one of the finest of the Book of Angels recordings, but among Zorm's most striking and rewarding works.

The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden
The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden

2.0 out of 5 stars An Embarrassment, 6 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Is this the same Mark Bowden who wrote the exemplary classic 'Black Hawk Down', because this book is just plain embarrassing. Given its short length and title I was expecting a second-by-second account of the raid that killed bin Laden, (backed up by an exploration of the manhunt that led to the shoot-out) a la 'Black Hawk...'. Instead he skims over the CIA hunt and the raid itself is relegated to a few scant pages (none based on first hand interviews with the SEAL operators, instead lifted from 'Mark Owen's' definitive 'No Easy Day') - what we do get is an exhaustive account of the politicking in Washington. And guess who the hero of the narrative is? Not the CIA operatives or JSOC operators, no it is the saintly genius hard-man Barak Obabma. Bush is ridiculed while Obama is lionised - only under his auspices was the raid and hit possible. Is he kidding?

Most of this is drawn from face-to-face interviews with Obama and his officials. This is all bunk. OBL was tracked and killed not because of Obama, but in spite of him.

Also little details are wrong, such as basic military nomencalture - Delta Force is never referred to as such but as simply Delta, Seal Team Six is referred to by its personnel as DEVGRU (see 'No Easy Day') - this plus other basic errors add to an account that is just not just ill-informed, but dangerously distorted.

Avoid thia book at all costs, unless it is read as satire. Bowden should be ashamed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zorn-tastic, 1 Jun. 2013

Zorn's 50th birthday yielded a goldmine of material, and this is among the best. Spiky, scary and compelling - no one can touch Zorn's genius.

4.0 out of 5 stars Allegory, 6 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not Hunter's finest work (it's alarmingly short) and a disappointment after the excellent 'Dead Zero', but this is still a top notch read. It functions best as action-thriller as allegory, with America, the Mall, obviously the US, and the ghastly, PC African-American Colonel Obobo as President you-know-who - this is a blistering satire that lays bare the current US parlous state.

A second-rate Hunter is still better than many of his contemporaries at their best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Avant Garde, 14 April 2013
This review is from: Exercises in Futility (Audio CD)
Probably Ribot's most Avant Garde release as composer. It serves well as a companion piece to Ribot's recording of John Zorn's 'Book of Heads' - stark, angular and strangely compelling - a must for fans of the extreme left-field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Key early minimalism, 3 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Two Solo Pieces (Audio CD)
A scintillating collection of early works from Philip Glass collaborator Gibson (originally released on Glass's own first record label, Chatham Square) - this is gripping stuff and a key collection of early minimalism from the underrated and overlooked composer/performer.

One of maestro Morricone's best latter period works. Dark, compelling and strangely evocative, this is often overlooked and underrated, but a must for all fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark and intense, 3 April 2013

Dark and intense, this is horror scoring of the highest order from the master of the genre, Chrstopher Young. Bleak, austere and haunting (reminiscent of Penderecki) - the is unsettling sound-design meets gothic mood piece - terrifying and unforgettable.
