A fun, attractive book which show Mark Hearld's very interesting ideas. It is a great way of showing how this artist tackles his work. I love the lively images whether woodcuts or collage. All are bursting with life. Thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written, informative story of arrogance and humility, 31 Dec 2013

I so enjoyed reading this book and by concentrating on fairly recent history it meant I could relate to it more easily than to the historical tales of Africa, ie it all happened in my lifetime.
I found the idea of each chapter being the thoughts of each of the females interesting but I did feel it was a book of two parts and the first part when the daughters were children was much more gripping.
The latter section, after the girls grew up - and quite suddenly, too suddenly perhaps - seemed to be more skimmed over and less cohesive. Some of the malapropisms from the girls did grate on me. I wanted to know much more about how they actually got to the places where they now found themselves. However, at this point I did learn more about the political climate both of the Congo and surrounding areas, which I am ashamed to say I had forgotten. The writer obviously feels very strongly about foreign interference in central Africa, and rightly so.
All in all a very good read.

I wanted a red toaster to complement my kitchen and this is a real beauty. The design doesn't detract from the function which is always precise and easy, however many slices one toasts at a time.

5.0 out of 5 stars such a beauty, 30 May 2012

I have been delighted with the mixer especially at half the price of its only real competitor. It is efficient, sturdy and easy to clean. Much easier to use and clean than my food processor which has been delegated to the back of a cupboard. So far I cannot fault it. I had intended to buy a cover but having bought the red model this machine looks so good just sitting there, it would be a shame to cover it up.

This book is a clear and easy to follow guide to what can be done with Photoshop7. All the illustrations show clearly the different effects that are possible and the occasional use of coloured examples makes the book more visually pleasing. The step by step guide is easy to cross reference and therefore double check when necessary. Question and answer sections at the end of the chapters are a good way to tell if you are ready to proceed to the next part of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars photoshop7 review, 26 Sep 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a thorough guide to all possiblities Photoshop7 offers. It explains clearly with numerous b&w illustrations a step by step guide which is easy to follow. It is also easy search and to check up on parts forgotten.
Although there are some interesting examples of artists' work in colour there is no explanation as to how they were made, which is a pity and seems therefore rather pointless. We all know what can be done but we want to know how to do it. That is why we buy such books. Some coloured examples, instead of so many small b&w ones, which show the processes would enhance the book no end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh no ... !!, 26 Jun 2009
This review is from: The Shack (Paperback)
I am surprised at some of the reviews comparing this book to such as The Pilgrim's Progress. What an insult to John Bunyan. I felt the message the author was trying to address could have been written in a couple of chapters and so let us get on with reading other things.
I got increasing frustrated with the simplistic language and felt the whole story was just an excuse to get muddled ideas into print.
It certainly cause a reaction in me. I felt rarely, if ever, has a book been such a waste of time to read.
