3.0 out of 5 stars Mahler symphonies, 7 Nov 2013

It's hard to get all this music ideally recorded in one box, and I don't think it's ever been achieved. The playing is fine however, and interpretation is a subjective issue (after all, it's very easy to get used to a favourite recording). The recordings seem rather distant to me, as I have previously enjoyed many LSO live recordings, e.g. Sibelius & Dvorak symphonies, various Berlioz, etc.).
In summary, at the moment I feel that some of the symphonies fare better than others but a) I need to spend more time with them; and b) they still represent good value for money and you certainly shouldn't discount getting hold of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understand this wonderful play like never before!, 30 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having studied this play many years ago at O Level, all I can say is that I wish this book had existed then. The "translation" is printed directly opposite the original text and makes straight reading of the play very easy indeed - no more turning to the back of the book for notes, or constantly referring to footnotes. Of course, if you're studying the play in depth you'll need much more guidance on Shakespeare's subtleties, double meanings, use of prose v poetry etc. etc. However, you'll still get enjoyment and understanding from this book, giving you a solid platform on which to build. Use it alongside (say) the RSC's excellent complete works and you'll soon find yourself appreciating and understanding the Bard's language like never before.

Some may find the translation too American here and there, but "A Midsummer Night's Dreamt" is a wonderful and beautiful work and anything that makes it more accessible to a wider public gets my vote.

The Canterbury Tales (No Fear Shakespeare) (Sparknotes No Fear Shakespeare)
The Canterbury Tales (No Fear Shakespeare) (Sparknotes No Fear Shakespeare)
by Geoffrey Chaucer
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful translation bringing the text up to date, 30 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you need some help with your Middle English, then this goes a significant way to providing it. The translation may occasionally be too American for some tastes, but my opinion is that it's best to get past that and use this as an easy way of getting to know Chaucer's characters. The format is great, as it shows the translations of paragraphs opposite the original text, and it brings the stories alive in a way that other translations have perhaps failed to. Read both versions a few times and find yourself understanding and appreciating Chaucer's humanity, subtlety and humour anew, then re-appreciate the excellence of the original poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes red wine taste better, 30 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A lot of today's wines, made to be drunk young, gain from getting some air into the mix - it lifts the flavour and bouquet. You can decant the stuff into a jug but this pourer saves the hassle. It stays firmly in the bottle's neck, but is easy to remove and clean. Obviously it won't turn a 2.99 bottle from the corner shop into a fine old Medoc (and you won't need to/shouldn't use it on the latter) but it does make the average red taste better as soon as you've popped the cork or unscrewed the lid.
