Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.29

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful book, 13 July 2013
This review is from: Black Swan Green (Paperback)
This is a coming of age tale set at the time of the Falklands war, during the prime ministership of Margaret Thatcher. The hero Jason Taylor is coming to terms with his stammer, sexual attraction, his parents' difficulties , his elder sister. It is a wonderful tale which draws you in, you understand the difficult choices Jason has to make. The book is well written, all the characters are fully developed. It is an excellent book and great read.

Anything for Billy
Anything for Billy
by Larry McMurtry
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars classic mcmurtry should be better known, 13 July 2013
This review is from: Anything for Billy (Hardcover)
This is a rereading of one of Larry Mc Murty's masterpieces. It contains one of my favourite lines in literature.......
"There was a time when I would have done anything for Billy."
An eastern Yankee pulp fiction writer goes west as a result of his domestic circumstances. Along the way he meets a Billy the kid, survives a range war. He comes across a cast of characters that he could only have imagined. Larry Mc Murty adopts the style of the pulp fiction writers short chapters , fast pace. Multitude of characters. The narrator's domestic circumstances provide comic relief, particularly when he remembers them fondly whilst in the most dire of straits.
Now the story bears little resemblance to the life of William Bonney , but who knows if this book is not a commentary on the making of legends. This Billy can be a nasty psychopath despite his charms , which at times appear quite limited.
I think the narrator stands in for the author and perhaps echoes his feelings about is own pressure to provide stories.
This book deserves higher place in Larry Mc Murty's canon

The Last Policeman: A Novel (Last Policeman Trilogy Book 1)
The Last Policeman: A Novel (Last Policeman Trilogy Book 1)
Price: £7.12

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the end of the world, 13 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The world is about to end in six months , rookie police detective Hank Palace investigates a suicide which may or may not be murder. He wants to do the right thing in a world gone mad as people prepare for the end by fulfilling their bucket lists, seeking solace in drink, drugs or religion.
This is a great plot device to hang the story on , I look forward to the rest of the trilogy. There are some wonderful parallels between the events of the story and the past events of Hank Palace's life.
Hank Palace has the making of one of the world's great detectives he just doesn't have a lot of time to prove it.
The sub text that the world will end for all of us someday is alluded to but never laboured. There are lots of digs at end of the world music , literature and lifestyles.

The Holy Thief (The Korolev Series)
The Holy Thief (The Korolev Series)
by William Ryan
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars a great russian detective, 13 July 2013
This is a wonderfully well written murder mystery. I had to say that at first I thought it was somebody taking the plot of Gorky Park and putting it back in time. I am delighted to say that is not. Captain Korolev investigates the horrendous death of an American, in 1936 at the start of Stalin's great terror.
Great plot, fine characters, a story line that grips and enough period detail to satisfy any fan of historical crime. This is a million miles away from Sam Eastman's. Eye of the red tsar, Captain Korolev is altogether a more rounded creation. William Ryan is a great addition to the ranks of crime writers.

American Gods
American Gods
by Neil Gaiman
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.29

5.0 out of 5 stars any old god wont do, 13 July 2013
This review is from: American Gods (Paperback)
Neil Gaiman is truly inventive writer. He has created a USA populated by the every god belonging to every person who ever landed there. These gods exist and depend on Faith. As their time passes and belief in them fades so they become less real. Now they are facing the modern American gods such as technology, money commercialism. This is the story of a man called shadow and how he comes into contact with these American gods. To tell anymore would be to spoil the story indeed I hope that I have not done that already.
This book is well written and the story carries the reader along at a terrific pace. This is a sage worthy of any of the old gods. Half the fun is identifying them as they come along. Have fun

A great DVD , wonderful way to view the series when it pleases us. The juke box item is a great way to let little kids enjoy the music without having to explain to them about teenage pregnancy , death , homosexuality , prejudice and all the other issues dealt with on the show. They will face all these soon enough.

For a piece of plastic the clips seem secure and sturdier than similar items purchased previously. Very good price for what you get.

i carry it on my key chain so i do not lose it and it enables me to use the touch screen on my Galaxy y phone. It is a litlle on the small side but it seems sturcier than some of the ink pens capacitive touch items i have used in the past which had a tendency to fall apart . Small but useful.
