I'd forgotten just how good they were. Honaloogie Boogie, All the Young Dudes and Saturday Gigs in particular.
Shame half the pages had been torn out of the accompanying booklet.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too sick for me, 25 Nov. 2014

Kallentoft should have stuck to the traditional four seasons for the Malin Fors series, the third book verged on brilliant, just flawed by the tedious descriptions of Malin's descent into alchoholism. I couldn't stomach the butchery scenes in Fifth Season, the author must have been a little warped to have written them. Standing back from that and trying to view it as a novel, there was too much of the "voices of the dead", and not enough description of places and people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best album of 2010, 10 Jun. 2014

Everything by everbody after "Not Accepted Anywhere" has been a bit of an anti-climax, but this is good, despite the general panning by the critics.
It takes a few listens to grow on you; if you're in a hurry then I think the run of songs beginning half-way through is best: Sweat, Heat Noise; High Time; Can I Take You Home.
My best album of 2010.

Typical Ann Cleeves in being very well written but rather unpredictable as to who did it.
The Inspector Ramsay is not a particulary pro-active hero, he just seems to let things fall into place.

5.0 out of 5 stars A glorious couple of years, 18 Feb. 2014

It incudes classics such as Temptation and Crushed by the Wheels of Industry. Very poppy considering that they broke away from Human League on the grounds that the latter had become too poppy. A successful blend of their synthesiser background and a soul-type horns section, and strong voices, though they rather lost it in the end as they turned more to white soul.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nostalgia Trip, 18 Feb. 2014

A good blend of pictures and facts. My father often talked about these paddle steamers. Just before WW2 broke out, he and one of the Sainsbury boys, who were aged only 10, went off on a trip to Margate on one. Then when WW2 did break out, he was one of the paddle steamer evacuees from East London to Lowestoft.

5.0 out of 5 stars A return to form, 8 April 2013

I'm not sure how a supposed quartet can have a fifth book, but I'm glad it does. After the rather unnecessary ending of the 4th Shetland book, and the middle of the road last Vera book, it's good to see Ann on top again. I wouldn't be too surprised if the new lady detective appears again in future books.

Dying Fall: A Ruth Galloway Investigation (Ruth Galloway 5)
Dying Fall: A Ruth Galloway Investigation (Ruth Galloway 5)
by Elly Griffiths
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £13.82

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good archaeological whodunnit, 8 April 2013

Very good, though nothing especially memorable. The usual cast from Norfolk transported to Lancashire, the usual rescuing someone in peril at the climax.

3.0 out of 5 stars Camera and memory ok when warm, case doesn't fit, 14 Jan. 2013

The camera and memory card are ok indoors and in a warm climate, but it says memory card error when used outdoors when even moderately cold (i.e. northern Europe half the year!). Same problem with different memory card or battery.
The case doesn't fit, it's too small, we had to buy another one.

Tomcats Screaming Outside

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, 14 Jan. 2013

My first impressions were that it was good, some tracks very good. But it grew on me, I'd now say most tracks are very good. Snowdrop and Low Life stand out, the latter a bit like Primal Scream's Miss Lucifer (which I think came out slightly later). All the funny little sound effects get a bit irritating after a while though.
