The Very Best Of Loretta Lynn
The Very Best Of Loretta Lynn
Price: £3.99

3.0 out of 5 stars A good overview of Loretta Lynns work, 2 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Any Loretta Lynn fan will be fully satisfied by this collection. It contains 24 tracks - 4 with Conway Twitty - and all the expected tracks. I have always liked Coal Miners Daughter and After the Fire is Gone. plus an early feminist anthem - The Pill. She produces good versions of Paper Rose and Blue Kentucky Girl. I also liked her cover of her friend Patsy Cline's hit She's Got You. While never a huge Loretta Lynn fan I was persuaded to buy this after watching a documentary of her life on the box. I was certainly not disappointed.

The Ides of April: Flavia Albia 1 (Falco: The New Generation)
The Ides of April: Flavia Albia 1 (Falco: The New Generation)
by Lindsey Davis
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating start to a new series., 2 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was quite prepared to be disappointed with this novel after a long love affair with the Falco series but from very early on I was hooked. The setting is in and around Rome which Lindsey Davis always handles beautifully and the nature of the crimes was unusual. Flavia Alba is by this time in her late twenties and a widow. As a whodunit it doesn't work but I think this is intentional on Davis' part. We know who the villain is but when will the heroine fall in? Thoroughly enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some late Elvis gems, 2 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Moody Blue (Audio CD)
A late album form the King. It is remarkable how well his voice held up despite his deteriorating health. A wii=de spectrum of songs from the fifties - Unchained Melody and Little Darlin' - - to covers of hits by Jim Reeves, Andy Williams and Roger Whitaker. Of the 19 tracks on this album I would imagine that over half would be familiar to most people. Of course Moody Blue and Way Down (with the wonderful bass line) were hits. I particularly enjoyed his version of Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain - right up there with the Hank Williams version - and Pledging My Love- just a notch below the Johnny Ace version. I am sure that no Elvis fan would be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hidden gems from the Big O., 2 July 2016

As a life=long fan of the Big O I will always be prejudiced in his favour but I really was not sure what to expect with this one. The only song with which I was familiar was You'll Never Walk Alone on which he does a very good job Of the remaining eleven songs Mickey Newberry contributes two, Bill Dees co-writes five with Roy and also contributes one of his own. These are as good as one would expect as is another by Don Gibson. This really is a high quality album leaving me wondering just why the hits dried up

4.0 out of 5 stars Falco quality as high as ever., 2 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Alexandria: (Falco 19) (Paperback)
Normally I prefer the Falco novels when they are set in Rome but this was very good despite its setting. I have been reading these novels since the start and this one is, I suspect, the penultimate. I think Lindsey Davis has generally got better as the series has progressed but she is probably wise to start all over again with her new heroin., However, I shall miss the Falco/Helena relationship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what Seekers fans want, 1 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a 4 CD set and basically covers almost all the Seekers recorded output though there was an album that came out on Decca I think which perhaps contained a few different tracks. Nevertheless there are all the favourite tracks from the LPs plus A-sides and B-sides. The bonus is that there is one previously unreleased track - Paper Bird - and four Judith Durham solo tracks.

I'm not sure that the live tracks add anything to the enjoyment (tracks1-16 on CD4) which were recorded at the Talk of the Town" except to remind us that they were and are (now that Judith Durham is well again) are very good live band.

Seekers fans will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what the title says, 4 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
While the group will always be remembered as the one Decca preferred to the Beatles, Brian Poole & the Tremeloes were never a major act even if they did have one No. 1 and a total of eight top 40 hits.

They are all here and some other interesting tracks including some medleys, presumably from their "Twisting the Hits" album. Most of their hits were covers but their versions of Twist and Shout and Do You Love Me seem to have stood the test of time. My personal favourites are their versions of the Crickets' Someone, Someone and Roy Orbison's Candy Man.

If you liked this group in the sixties you won't be disappointed and new listeners may be pleasantly surprised.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection, 4 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Duane Eddy fans will luxuriate in the sound of the "twangy guitar" spread over 6 original albums.

There are a lot of familiar tracks here but given the sheer number of recordings there are bound to be some unexpected pleasures for all but the most ardent admirer who has heard them all.

The last CD includes some strange vocal rarities on which our man is playing the backing - .not memorable but interesting curiosities.

Overall an excellent collection of Duane Eddy's work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rome made easy, 4 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
To call this book light-weight is not to criticise it in any way. It is a compendium of facts about Rome and Romans, some of which are familiar, somel ess so. Enjoyable to read and worth retaining as a reference book.

This is designed for the average reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars You probablyhaven't heard these, 4 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Given that none of the tracks on this album quite made the American Hot Hundred there are quite a few well-known names here - Brenda Lee, Connie, Francis, Bobby Rydell, Neil Sedaka, Brian Hyland and Freddy Cannon are probably the best known though there are some other familiar names.

To be fair there are probably no tracks here that you would expect to have beeen massive hits but if you like the American sound of the early to mid-sixties then this is very enjoyable.

Lots of fun just to play the album and try to work out who is performing without looking at the track listing. Gary U.S. Bonds and Brian Hyland are particularly distinctive.
