5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful rendations of some known and obscure orchestral string pieces, 29 Jan. 2015
Beautiful rendations of some known and obscure orchestral string pieces. I originally purchased it for the rare recording of the adagio by Lekeu (I believe it was his only orchestral piece), but the entire recording is first class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable!!, 8 Mar. 2012
This recording is really, really well done! The ensemble consists of harp, 2 violins, french horn, contra bass and occasional glockenspiel (used with an amazing effect on the song "Sounds of silence".) The harp re-captures Paul's guitar, sometimes note for note (and in the case of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" that glorious gospel-like piano intro and accompaniment). The arrangements are superb, tasteful, creative, sometimes lush, such as in "Old Friends" where the harp and strings and horn re-captures the original orchestration. Sometimes other S&G songs are quoted, such as the weaving in of "The Boxer" within the opening piece, "The Dangling conversation." I was surprised by the inclusion of "Peggy-O" and "Benidictus," which are not exactly Simon and Garfunkel originals (they appeared on their earliest album "Wednesday Morning 3 AM") but musically they somehow work and blend nicely with the overall recording. But the real surprise was "Mrs. Robinson" an amazing arrangement with much of the funk of the original. They really did an excellent job. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Uneven Arrangements and Performances, 11 Aug. 2011
I really wanted to love this. There are some nice things here but this recording simply doesn't compare to Goren Sollscher's efforts, which are gorgeously played and arranged. As a guitarist, I find some of the arrangements inane and self-indulgent. Here Comes the Sun, for example, which is the opener, is just a boring arrangement with some distasteful flamingo touches and a nonsensical musical tangent near the end which is too long, and just annoying. In fact, most of the arrangements are plain annoying and are filled with ridiculous filler. Why must Blackbird be preceded by a mediocre rendition of Bach? There are some nice touches, such as the rest of Blackbird, parts of Penny Lane (only parts---he plays much of it too bouncy and flippantly for me). Shame. I hope Mr. Sollscher releases another Beatles compendium. His are terrific.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Piano Quintet is a Must, 17 Dec. 2009
The piano quintet is literally bursting with melody--I have to say that I believe that it is one of Stanfords most inspired works. This is a truly wonderful performance of 2 first class late romantic chamber works. If you love Brahms you'll love these!!
