1.0 out of 5 stars Check The Small Print Carefully, 23 Jan. 2015

I purchased this as a gift to myself after a number of enticing emails from Amazon before Christmas. A £5.00 promotional voucher was offered if a £20.00 gift card was purchased. I purchased the gift card and days later I received the £5.00 promotional code. When I tried to use the promotional voucher however, I discovered, to my surprise, that I could not. The reason was that although the item was fulfilled by Amazon it was being sold by another party. A pedantic clause buried in the abyss of the terms and conditions small print.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hot Cold Hot Cold, 15 Sept. 2014
If you are planning to plumb this shower unit to the mains supply it is most likely to annoy as the fluctuation in the water pressure affects the behavior of the flow resulting in rapid hot and cold variations. It is at its worst during the summer months, when in warm days the water will not heat up or burst into scolding hot. Perhaps it would work more efficiently if plumbed to a loft water tank.

1.0 out of 5 stars Flawed, very flawed!, 25 July 2013
This review is from: Un Flic [DVD] (DVD)
This film is so flawed that almost renders itself as highly unwatchable. It is the last film made by the great Jean-Pierre Melville but nowhere near a patch on his previous greats such as Le Circle Rouge, Le Samurai, etc. The only potential interest that one would want to watch this film, is for the curious flaws right from the outset and of course the casting of Alain Delon and Catherine Deneuve.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perpetual Daylight, 14 Jun. 2013
This review is from: Insomnia [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
A remake in English of an earlier Norwegian original by Erik Skjoldbjaerg. I guess the movie slots well into the character study psychological neo-noir thriller genre. It is rather slowly paced, with an almost laid back style. The plot is simple but effective and the flow of events quite linear without any loose ends that would in any way challenge the viewer. Murder of a teenage girl in Alaska, LAPD duo despatched to help local police, mistaken shooting and killing of one of the duo by the other, shelf-cover up attempt, emotions of guilt, etc.

The acting is good by the protagonists but from my point of view it did not come forth as convincing enough and a touch wooden at times. Perhaps I was anticipating more from the acting talents of Al Pacino and Robin Williams handling a deeper and more elaborate plot than the one on offer here. The movie appeared to have a "made-for-TV" feel rather than a cinematic feature.

Magnificent Alaskan scenery!

5.0 out of 5 stars Erinyes, 24 May 2013
This review is from: Mulholland Drive [DVD] (DVD)
"".... Come to me now again, release me from this pain, everything my spirit longs to have fulfilled, fulfil, and you be my ally...."" From the poems of Sappho circa 630 - 570 BCE, Lesbos, Greece.

Lynch you are a tease!

As of late, a great fan of David Lynch's work, I finally got round to watching "Mulholland Drive". There is a turning point in the course of the film where everything appears to be thrown up in the air and any assumed understanding of the multiple strands plot, disappears. It's the point where someone may justifiably scream "What the hell is going on?". Persevere and you will be rewarded!

Not everything makes sense, some scenes in my view are meaningless in terms of plot relevance, such as the cowboy random appearances, the reckless and clumsy contract killer shooting mistakenly through a wall and carries on killing irrelevant people, the bizarre espresso coffee spitting scene, the young man with the dream-come-true fear at Winkie's, but curiously enough they don't appear to be out of place in the film. I am sure seasoned cinematography critics out there can explain these easily but in my view the film is a fantasy, a dream with some nightmarish undertones. And, in dreams or fantasies we don't have to explain everything. In most cases we wouldn't be able to, anyway!

What came to mind as I was watching Diane/Betty moving along the non-linear flow of the film, were notions of innocence, aspiration, love, passion, failure, reality, disappointment, jealousy, hate, envy, rage, vengeance, remorse, retribution, (old couple resembling the goddesses of retribution, Erinyes, tormenting the wrong-doers). Do these words bring to mind the human condition?

Not the mainstream feature film but it wasn't meant to be. It challenged me immensely but in a nice way, tantamount to that of trying to solve an engrossing riddle or puzzle. Have I fully understood what was really intended by David Lynch? Most probably not, but I believe I have arrived at a conclusion good enough to make me appreciate this masterfully made enigmatic Sapphic thriller. I enjoyed it and that's what matters to me.

It could be considered as the second instalment in a trilogy of psychological dream-like mystery thrillers, with the first being "Lost Highway - 1997" and the third "Inland Empire - 2006".

Some reviewers have brought the gory and sick "Hellraiser" into their reviews. Why? Different genres! And as for the box thing, if they were to be fair and just, then surely it is Pandora that should be suing Clive Barker for copyright infringement!

My only criticism must unreservedly go to the DVD release owners who "forgot" to add subtitles and chapters, in this edition by studio CANAL, Optimum HOME. Catching every word spoken in psychological thrillers matters, especially for the hard of hearing folk out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything we see hides another thing..., 13 May 2013
This review is from: Lost Highway [DVD] [1997] (DVD)
As of late, a great fun of David Lynch, I finally got round to watching Lost Highway. I am not sure it could be classified as a masterpiece, as many reviewers have claimed, but certainly weird, bizarre and perplexing enough (but without a meaningful, cohesive or purposeful plot) to realise why it flopped in the cinemas on release in the late 90s but now enjoying an almost cult status.

If you are a mainstream cinema goer this film is not for you. However, If you are into niece, weird mind states, surreal stuff, with a touch of constrained eroticism, that can be interpreted which ever way to suit a reasonable or gratifying explanation, you'll enjoy it.

The parallel I would draw here is like looking at a Salvador Dally or Rene Magritte painting, trying to make sense of it and soon realise that it is far from being intuitive or apparent. You are however looking at a piece of great art, and in the words of Rene Magritte "Everything we see hides another thing". Similar feelings are evoked by the Lost Highway.

It could be considered as the first instalment in a trilogy of psychological dream-like mystery thrillers, with the second being "Mulholland Drive - 2001" and the third "Inland Empire - 2006".

One major criticism must unreservedly go to the DVD release owners who "forgot" to add any subtitles. So, if you are trying to pick up every word spoken (that at times are mumbled) or if you are hard of hearing, then this will present you with an additional challenge!

3.0 out of 5 stars Ray Ban Galore, 8 Mar. 2013
This is the second offering in the Matrix trilogy. Still on the theme of Plato's allegory of the cave adaptation but lacking the originality of Matrix and a convincing plot. A bit more tongue-in-cheek with the morphing bits not as gnarly as in Terminator and the fly-and-rescue sequences not as gnarly as in Superman. But hey... Neo is still good, Trinity still good in the catsuit, but Persephone steels the miss sexy show in her skin-tight cream pvc dress and fleshy lips! Oh, and the Zion score by Fluke is pretty catchy.
