This album, although a couple of years old now, has been considerably overlooked in the mediated musical slipstream, with occasional nods here and there in disparate press, or via second hand sources.
The thing about GGD is the approach. The journey from arty, abstract, clattering brooklyn noiseniks to something approaching a Pop instinct has left them with a personal stamp, variously featuring: Treated, or Midi guitar, synths that bend between islamic style pop and cod mysticism, Grime and Dancehall and Hiphop indebted rhythms, sampled edits, noise, and witchy, forest-shriek vocals. It's a brew that in the hands of others might sound contrived or patronising. Instead, the improvised approach (later edited down into more coherence) means that these elements gel into a future organic. The quote on the sleeve sticker says "GGD seem to have found the G-spot of the universe", which you might be forgiven for brushing off as standard hyperbole, but it makes sense. They have marinated the hipster music styles of the last 5 or 6 years, and served them up as their own, compelling dish.

Unfortunately for Tarantino, the iconography of his first two films made him the poster boy for a certain generation, and so, he gets a lot of teenage boys with pictures of Uma on their wall (hello, 'Real metal listener')complaining that Jackie Brown is crap because it doesn't contain enough violence.

Tarantino's trick is that he has always played around with the dynamics of cliche, flatness and depth, bringing alive the 2D pulpy influences into flesh, making stock in trade characters breathe before icing the cake with his own particular, post-modern style. When I saw Jackie Brown on TV the other day, i realised it was such a shame that he went back to iconography and the pornography of violence again in Kill Bill, a film that is supposed to be porno-coke for the eyeballs. (Fair enough as a concept, but trying to shoehorn in any depth/length made it a grotesque cartoon. Tailor-made for teenage boys only, and their spiritual father, Jonathan Ross.)

In JB, everything is note perfect: the rendering of Elmore Leonard's particular atmosphere, all of the performances, the 'over-long' length, the meloncholic mid-life love story contrasted with money scams and the threat of violence etc. Concerning the violence in JB, the difference when compared to Kill Bill, is that you are scared for the characters because they seem real and sympathetic, and this is because the actors have screen time to relax into to their skins.

This is such a good film: It almost plays like a mood piece in it's pace, except with exceptional characters, acting, writing and plotting.

In short: Don't be put off by the meathead Kill Bill crew who judge a film based only on the amount of comic book violence it contains, this film kicks it into touch in every way.

The stories in Summer Blonde are just less snappy and murkier/ more complicated. This is where those loners in Sleepwalk turn acidic and slightly nastier in reaction to the world that rejects them, inspiring a broader section of emotions as Tomine expands on his life-snapshot technique.
As for the last story, it is simply one of the most moving, sympathetic and potent renditions of youth....pretty much ...ever! Forget Breakfast Club, provided you were on the right side of the meathead social circle at school, it should resonate for a couple of days at least.
In short, buy this and Sleepwalk, because Tomine, along with Dan Clowes and Chris Ware, is finally maximising the potential of the comic book, putting the medium on the same level as any art form.
