This is a spectacular DVD set of 1960s television series Honey West, similar to Rockford Files but with a difference. The show stars Anne Francis as a private investigator who works with a male partner named "Sam" (John Ericson). She runs her late father's Los Angeles detective agency with such gadgets only to be seen in a James Bond movie; tear gas earrings, a radio transmitter disguised as a martini olive or a pendant necklace and many other forms of electronic devices. Honey is not only sexy and glamorous, but also proficient in karate and judo and not afraid to use a firearm to defend her-self. The first episode, "The Swingin' Mrs. Jones" establishes the show's cool vibe and cult appeal in which she goes undercover as a society matron to quash a blackmail ring that preys upon wealthy women. In the episode, "Whatever Lola Wants...." Honey is hired to escort a man to a charity ball; unaware that he is a murderer. She gets caught in a scam involving the horse racing. Ultimately with the help of her partner she manages to catch the bad guys. In the episode, "The Princess and the Paupers" Honey is called by the father of a kidnapped rock musician for help. First it appears as a publicity stunt, but turns into extortion and a murder mystery. In another episode, Honey saves young girl when she is lost at the airport ("In the Bag"). This cleverly plotted half hour black-and-white episodes feature witty dialogue, jazzy scores and great action. In 1965, when Honey West premiered, spies and detectives rivaled cowboys in popularity. Honey was the first female detective with her own series, the first season aired 30 great episodes and they are available in 4 DVDs (one set). Supporting role is greatly provided by Sam; he usually sits in the high-tech surveillance van talking to Honey via a radio. Their relationship was kept platonic, and professional, in spite of this the show gets better and better as you watch all the episodes from beginning to end. This DVD set is highly recommended to all fans of spies, detectives, and cop shows. The 30 episode descriptions (storylines) are as follows:
1. "The Swingin' Mrs. Jones"
Honey goes undercover as a society matron to quash a blackmail ring that preys upon wealthy women.
2. "The Owl and the Eye"
In order to test a museum's security system, an insurance company hires Honey to steal a jade carving that they have insured.
3. "The Abominable Snowman"
After agreeing to deliver a novelty salesman's sample case, Honey becomes marked for death.
4. "A Matter of Wife and Death"
Someone tries to sink a ship carrying Honey and a woman who hired her after receiving anonymous death threats.
5. "Live a Little, Kill a Little"
Honey and an assassin race to find the former girl friend of an underworld leader.
6. "Whatever Lola Wants...."
Honey is hired to escort a man to a charity ball; unaware that he is a murderer.
7. "The Princess and the Paupers"
Honey is called in when the kidnapping of a rock and roll star, first thought to be a publicity stunt, turns into a murder mystery.
8. "In the Bag"
A precocious young girl whom Honey was escorting between her divorced parents gets lost at the airport.
9. "The Flame and the Pussycat"
Honey and Sam must catch a warehouse arsonist in order to secure a contract with an insurance company.
10. "A Neat Little Package"
A news-dealer survives a car wreck with amnesia and a mysterious $175,000.
11. "A Stitch in Crime"
Honey is hired to recover a stolen dress collection valued at $100,000.
12. "A Million Bucks in Anybody's Language"
Honey investigates the death of a P.I. whose car exploded shortly after he called Honey for help, and she uncovers a plan to print fake British pounds.
13. "The Gray Lady"
Honey goes after a master thief who stole an actress's jewel collection while she was being interviewed on TV. NOTE: This was the actual pilot for the series, and has a different opening sequence and music.

An electronics firm hires Honey to find an industrial spy who has been leaking company secrets.

This book in cosmology requires some knowledge in undergraduate level physics, where the author chronicles the very early history of the universe while describing the underlying physical concepts. In the light of epoch experiments to be conducted with new Large Hadron Collider (LHC), during October 2008 at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, located in Geneva, Switzerland, this book lays a foundation for some of these experiments. The LHC will create the conditions of less than a millionth of a second after Big Bang when there was a hot soup of tiny particles called quarks and gluons. The particle collider LHC will expect to generate a numerous particles after two beams of protons collide after travelling for 17 miles at the speed of light. The data will provide evidence for the existence of additional dimensions and also Higgs Boson, the particle that explains why matter has mass.

The most interesting chapters in the book are the First Three Minutes (Chapter 5) and First One-Hundred Seconds (Chapter 7). Standard model of cosmology proposes that the universe is made of four natural physical forces; weak nuclear force, strong nuclear force, electromagnetic force and gravitational force. When the universe was 10(e-43) seconds old (the first moment of the universe), it was at a temperature of 10(e32)K, and all the four forces were proposed to be in a unified manner. The author is one of the pioneers in this field of research and he theoretically demonstrated the existence of unified of weak and electromagnetic forces for which he was awarded Nobel Prize. At above critical temperature of 3X10(e15)K, these two forces were symmetrical and had the same strength, and the symmetry broke as the cooling of the universe decreased the heat below the critical temperature. During the very first minute, when the universe was in thermal equilibrium, the numbers and the distribution of all particles were determined statistically and not by prior history, i.e., reality as perceived by cause - effect relationship did not exist. The abundance of present day helium, neutrinos, microwave radiation, and the relics of the state of equilibrium ended at close of the first second. As for as we know nothing that we can observe depended on the history of the universe, isotropic or homogeneous nature prior to this time except the proton nuclear particle ratio. The universe probably started with equal number of protons and neutrons, and the conversion of neutrons to protons occurred through its interaction with other particles such as; electrons, positrons, neutrinos and antineutrinos and not through neutron radioactive decay. Hydrogen and helium was produced in abundance prior to the evolution of galaxies and stars. Stars evolved using hydrogen as a nuclear fuel to generate energy and their existence, simultaneously producing the heavier elements as products of nuclear fusion.

The detection of background cosmic microwave radiation (CMR) in 1965 was one of the most important discoveries of 20th century. From the known properties of black body radiation using the early temperatures close to the origin, physicists have calculated the density of the photons, and the ratio of photons and nuclear particles at this time of the universe. Chapter 6 gives a historical development that predicted the existence of CMR, a remnant of the big bang, and also history of cosmological theories of nucleo-synthesis of heavier elements. This book is widely read by both academics and others, and often quoted by clergy in their sermons. Recent advances in cosmology has rendered some data obsolete, but it is very well structured with useful glossary of physics terms and concepts, a mathematical supplement, and suggested books for more enthusiastic readers.

This is an excellent review of the current economic mortgage crisis that led to financial disaster. The author lays out all facts leading to this fiasco in an easy to understand language. No information is ignored in this fact finding mission; unscrupulous lenders, irresponsible borrowers, greedy speculators, developers, real estate agents, investment bankers/investors and last but not least the inept regulatory agencies destroyed the economic order and passed on the burden to unsuspecting tax payers.

Subprime mortgage is a loan made on the basis of a weak or troubled credit history. Historically it was a peripheral financial phenomenon; a marginal market with few borrowers and lenders, but that changed in 1990s. Mortgage lending companies were not setup as traditional depositories or brokers, but as real estate investment trusts (REITs). It is a corporate form for developers to avoid corporate income taxes. REIT pays out the earnings to shareholders who pay personal income taxes on them. Since they are publicly traded, it avoids regulators. But it comes under SEC which focuses mainly on insider trading, and corporate transparency, and not on mortgage lending. This helped REITs financial mismanagement streak through regulatory cracks. By the time subprime financial shock hit, 35% of the after-tax income was spent on debt obligation (Fig 13.5). The financial benefits of outsized asset price gains have gone almost entirely to higher income households (Table 13.1).

The ripple effect is observed all over economy: The government sold U.S. Treasury bonds to raise cash for the economic stimulus package but the consumers spent the entire check on raising gasoline costs. Saudi Arabia which bought most of these bonds essentially financed the purchase of their own oil! A sharp drop in dollar value in the international market did more damage than good, because this downfall helped the surge in oil prices, and consequently raised food and other commodity prices. Given the higher dollar value of Euro and Yen, Europeans and Asians were consuming more throwing the demand and supply curves off balance.

This book is very well researched, and organized with useful economic data, and this is not for the investors who are looking for juicy financial secrets: Highly recommended.

The author recalls and recounts his life experiences about his catholic upbringing, and his conflict with scientific and philosophical education. He calls himself a "religious naturalist," who does not believe in personal, transcendent God; yet feels religious and belief in Catholic sacramental tradition.

This is a potpourri of sociology and theology dictated by a certain level of morality required by Catholicism. The author discusses the work of many philosophers, scientists and theologians about the impact of faith, prayers, and religious practices. In the fifth chapter titled "The Sea into which all rivers flow" he presents an interesting discussion as to whether the nature of God is veiled as most scientists believe, or Goethe who suggested that God has no veils and nature has no mystery. To support this controversial view he discusses the radical and feminist views of Meera Nanda who radicalizes ancient Indus culture and Hindu philosophy to present a liberal humanistic approach. If Hinduism is an extremist's faith, how would she categorize Islamic faith and Islamic laws? The author correctly notes in the Sixth chapter on Ockham's razor that righteousness and belief in false prophets lead to culture wars, jihad, crusades, and mass killings.

The author is a physicist and a philosopher, but his work in this book does very little service to these two disciplines which offers consensus knowledge of the world in a rational and methodical way. Advances in quantum cosmology, particle physics and molecular biology have revolutionized human thought and brings science and philosophy closer than ever. Although God does not directly figure in any equations, formula or living cell but his presence is felt figuratively.

This book is not easy to read and at times it is boring: I hope this book is little more interesting to other readers than it was to me.

The author starts his book with a pessimistic quotation from psychologist Stuart Sutherland, "Nothing worth reading has been written about it" (consciousness.)
At the end of chapter 3 the author makes a rather optimistic conclusion that "So, I do believe we are closing in on what consciousness is and what it's for, I admit...... But we are on our way" (to understand consciousness.) After reading this book in its entirety, the reader is unable to share this author's optimism.

The author attempts to relate sensation to subjective qualia, and consciousness. What is creating the sensation and what makes this to be the subject of it? Could it be consciousness or selfhood? Francis Crick and Christof Koch believe the most difficult problem is the qualia; the redness of red, painfulness of pain, etc. The author believes that neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) may be the causal factor because the experience of sensation is a result of neuronal activity. The other factor could be the functional correlates of sensation (FCC).

Wherever there is a subjective experience, there has to be a subject. Because pain, mood, wish can not exist without a bearer, and the person has to be there first before the subjective experience. Sensation consists of; ownership that belongs to the subject, body location (particular part of the body), present-ness (being at present), qualitative modality (visual, facial, hearing, etc.) and phenomenal immediacy (happening to me instead of somebody else, happening at the moment than another moment). The author surmises that the evolution of sensation, feeling, and perception starting with primitive amoeba and ending up with human beings is as follows: It appears that during evolution the sensory activity gets privatized. The command signals for every sensory response get short circuited before they reach the body surface. So that instead of reaching all the way out to peripheral site of stimulation (as in amoeba), they now reach only to points more and more central on the incoming sensory pathways, until eventually the whole processes becomes closed off from the outside world in an internal loop within the brain (as in humans.)

The book is very brief and it is based on guest lectures delivered at Harvard in spring 2004. Some paragraphs have been repeated verbatim; for example, third paragraphs of pages 94 and 121 are almost the same. It would have been easier for the reader, if the last paragraph of each chapter or the last chapter of the book had summarized the author's point.

This is another great work of Erwin Schrodinger which gives an insight into the biology of life from a physicist's perspective that inspired scientists like; Francis Crick who discovered the structure of DNA, J.B.S. Haldane, and Roger Penrose. It is clear from this work and other books of Schrodinger that he was one of the few physicists who deeply thought of the inner most secrets of life. This book is divided into two parts: What's Life (7 chapters) and Mind and Matter (6 chapters).

The physicist's most dreaded weapon, the mathematical deduction can not be used for life because it is too complex to be accessible to equations. The orderliness required for the preservation of life does not come by the random heat motions of atoms and molecules, but statistical averages that provide order. Schrodinger asks a simple question; why is life made of so many atoms and not just a few. He offers three examples; higher magnetic fields, increase in molecular population and the error introduced into a reaction rate constant or any other physical parameter would be far too great if only few molecules are involved to form life. Hence orderliness, and of course evolution and diversity of life, requires very large population of molecules.

The world is a construct of our sensations, perceptions, memories; all existing objectively and all scientific knowledge is based on sense of perception and nonetheless the scientific views of material processes formed in this way lack all sensual qualities and can not account for the latter. Theories that are developed from scientific observations of experiments never account for sensual qualities. The sentient, percipient and thinking ego does not figure anywhere in our world picture, because it is itself the world picture. It is identified with the whole and not part of it. The physical world lacks all the sensual qualities that go to make the subject of cognizance. It is colorless, soundless, and impalpable. The world is deprived of everything that makes sense in its in relation to the consciously contemplating, perceiving, and feeling the subject; no personal god can form part of world model that has only became accessible at the cost of removing everything personal from it. God is missing from spacetime picture like sense of perception or ones own personality. Upanisads (Hindu Scripture) states that Atman = Brahman, the personal self equal the all comprehending eternal self. Consciousness never experienced in plural only in the singular, and plurality is merely a series of different aspect of one soul and one conscious produced by a deception (Maya). There is no multiplicity of minds; in reality and truth there is only one mind.

Before and after is not a quality of the world we perceive but pertains to the perceiving mind and don't imply the notion of space and time. After relativity, the notion of before and after reside on the cause and effect relationship. The general directedness of all happenings is explained by the mechanical or statistical theory of heat. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that order changes to disorder but not disorder to order, and time travels in one direction from past to future, but not future to past. The statistical theory of time has a stronger bearing on the philosophy of time than theory of relativity. The latter presupposes unidirectional flow of time while statistical theory constructs from order of events.

My body functions according to laws of nature, but I direct body motions. The word "I" means to state that I who control the motion of the atoms and molecules according to the Laws of Nature. The uncertainty principle and the lack of causal connection in nature introduce certain features into physical reality. For example, we can not make any factual statement about a physical system without interacting with it which would change the physical state of the system. This explains why no complete description of any physical object is ever possible. These laws have pushed the boundary between the subject and object. In fact subject and object are only one, and no barrier exists. It is the same element that goes to compose my mind and the world. The situation is the same for every mind and its world, in spite of the unfathomable abundance of cross references between them. The world is given to me only once, not one existing and one perceived.

The last chapter gives brief autobiographical sketches of Schrodinger translated by his granddaughter. Schrödinger was deeply philosophical with strong family: He loved and respected his parents. His strong interest in physics and Vedanta philosophy (one of the six schools of Hindu Philosophy) is apparent, but he shy's away from writing about his complex personal life that involved many women and numerous extramarital affairs.

For many diehard Cheers fans, Thursday was not the same for first few years since this show was called off the air. In fact for many of us watching this sitcom on NBC was the highlight of the week. Those days are long gone but reruns, books, interviews and news info kept this show alive for sometime.

This book is somewhat dry in that it remains as a pure trivia book with questions about main characters of the show. No doubt a true fan will score an A grade, but the author could have a gone further to discuss few selected episodes and perhaps interview with cast and crew and go behind the scenes and provide information about the workings of the show in general.

This is a collection of eight essays. Erwin Schrodinger's profound knowledge and deep philosophical thought are reflected in each chapter as he walks through the nature of reality as perceived by classical and quantum physics. The critical issues discussed are: Is cause - effect relationship required for physical reality? Does statistical and chance (probabilities) replace cause and effect? How quantum uncertainty affects physical reality? Could we determine the initial state of an electron? Does positivism makes sense in quantum world. These are some of the questions asked, and he tries to answer them with an easy to understand language. This work is another example of this great genius who was curious about life and the universe from a very young age.

Schrodinger credits Franz Exener, Fritz Hasenoehrl, and David Hume for the idea of departing from mechanical concept of cause and effect. He suggests statistical outcome to replace pure cause - effect relationship. But practical impossibility to determine the initial state of an electron in spacetime precludes from understanding the final (effected) state of the electron. Statistical laws are even more clearly manifested when the behavior of each individual particle is undetermined. It is likely chance (probability) lies at the root of casualty. If the behavior of each atom in every single event is determined by casualty then the details of each individual cause - effect events in a multi-electron system must be registered (positivism,) in reality only the statistical outcome is registered. An experiment can not decide between these two possibilities because scientific reasoning will allow us either to derive chance from law or law from chance. If mass, position and velocity of an entity is precisely known at the very start, and then the future behavior is easily predicted by classical physics. But classical physics does not make sense in quantum world (subatomic level), because identical conditions at a point in time do not invariably lead to identical results, but it results in identical statistical outcome; the relative frequencies of various possible events. According to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the velocity for a precisely defined position in space is not determinable. The second problem is determining the actual state of an electron. For example, it does not have a definite orbit around the nucleus that can be virtually detected, and it is in a state of perpetual motion around the nucleus without losing kinetic energy contrary to laws of classical physics. Experiments can measure only the energy level difference recorded in the form spectra. Virtual observation is essential to confirm the real existence of an object according classical physics. The exact registration of electromagnetic field generated by moving electron is precluded by Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Uncertainty principle is not an incomplete knowledge. The current view does not accept either ubiety or velocity as permanent objective realities. The word finding a particle at point A does not imply that it was there before. Our measuring device has brought it there or we disturbed its velocity while measuring and this doesn't imply it had a value. The implications of being and having are not the same even though the positivist philosophy concludes that they are one and the same.

This is a collection of nine essays eight of which originally appeared under the title Science and the Human Temperament. The ninth chapter contains the address given by Schrödinger on the occasion of the Nobel Prize award for his discovery of wave mechanics. His profound knowledge and deep philosophical thought are reflected in each chapter as he walks through the nature of reality as perceived by classical and quantum physics. The critical issues discussed are: Is cause - effect relationship required for physical reality? Does statistical and chance (probabilities) replace cause and effect? How quantum uncertainty affects physical reality? Could we determine the initial state of an electron? Does positivism makes sense in quantum world. These are some of the questions asked, and he tries to answer them with an easy to understand language. This work is another example of this great genius who was curious about life and the universe from a very young age.

Schrodinger credits Franz Exener, Fritz Hasenoehrl, and David Hume for the idea of departing from mechanical concept of cause and effect. He suggests statistical outcome to replace pure cause - effect relationship. But practical impossibility to determine the initial state of an electron in spacetime precludes from understanding the final (effected) state of the electron. Statistical laws are even more clearly manifested when the behavior of each individual particle is undetermined. It is likely chance (probability) lies at the root of casualty. If the behavior of each atom in every single event is determined by casualty then the details of each individual cause - effect events in a multi-electron system must be registered (positivism,) in reality only the statistical outcome is registered. This drama is based on the story of Phyllis Reynolds Naylor that shows the growing pains of a teenager named Alice McKinley (Alyson Stoner.) Strongly supported by the fine performance of Penny Marshall as Mrs. Plotkin and Luke Perry as Ben McKinley, the movie depicts the sad and painful years of a teenager who lost her mother when she was five. Her father Ben is of little help since he is still in a state sadness after losing his wife. Adjusting to the life of widower and bringing up two children on his own is a little too much for him. In the meantime Alice learns to live in a fantasy world with vivid imagination to keep her happy. With some help from her teacher Mrs. Plotkin, she learns to be less judgmental in life and grows to a reasonable young woman. The movie shows a contrasting life of her big brother Lester (Lucas Grabeel) who seems to have a normal life and even popular among girls. The movie shows the vulnerability of growing young woman without her mother, but apparently has lesser impact on a boy. Alice Stoner offers a brilliant performance in this excellent family drama: Highly recommended for family viewing.
