5.0 out of 5 stars Shining star in MY collection, 20 Nov. 2014

I am surprised at the rather low star rating of this latest release of the original and best blue-eyed soul singer, Timi Yuro. This CD is fantastic! NONE of the twenty-five songs have EVER been released before on compact disc! In addition, they range from the middle fifties to the early eighties, from before Timi even had a career to when she was hovering on the edge of never being able to sing again. Happily, there were quite a few years left regarding that, but such a timespan on one CD makes a real change from beginning with the iconic 'Hurt' and stalling at 1962! The songs are a mixture of demos and songs Timi recorded for special purposes; while the background music is sometimes understandably rough, that spine-chilling voice makes such startlingly emotional and brilliant performances on such songs as 'Until You Were Gone' and 'I'm a Star Now' that one can see that they should have been released as singles. The soul just bites through the music. All the songs are greatly enjoyable - and a couple, even to this collector who has heard practically everything the lady ever recorded, were even new to me! You even get to hear the build-up of one of the songs (Takes 1-6), raw in the studio! True, the sound does vary, as the recordings have been taken from acetates instead of master tapes, but there is no other way you will get these songs, that's for sure. In any case, Timi's voice and indomitable spirit always shines through the most muzzy demo. And the sound gets increasingly better as the CD runs on from the earliest - and roughest - recordings. Another feather in RPM's cap for this gem of a collector's release - and another example of how incredible it was that such a talented artist was not in truth 'a star' THEN. While not for the casual listener, this CD is an essential for any fan/collector of Timi Yuro (and their name surely must be legion!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A COLLECTOR'S DREAM!, 19 Nov. 2014

Jasmine's latest of three releases spotlighting the inimitable Brook Benton's marvelous career is a winner! Whereas the previous CDs majored on the peak of his career, THE EARLY YEARS deals with the years that Brook undeservedly laboured to make it with the public. And undeservedly it definitely was. I must admit that I was expecting the material to be a lot rougher than I found it, as the early part of most artists' careers leaves something to be desired, but for the most part, not so. Disc 1 starts off with a swing, comprising four little gems in the form of recordings by the Sandmen, the group of whom Brook formed a part before going solo. The songs are really super! One is rather surprised, particularly in the case of the song 'OOH' that sales were so mediocre. No collector should miss the chance of adding these gems to their music library. More of the tracks on Disc 1 were recorded with a variety of orchestras, including Ray Ellis and Quincy Jones, and their superior sound adds a touch of glitter to the singer's smooth, unmistakable, and already mature vocals. The remaining tracks are also fantastic, with some real highpoints reached in several songs that really should have charted better than they did and, almost without exception, didn't. At times, Brook really rocks on this disc! A wonderful rendering of 'The Wall' and his first charter, 'A Million Miles from Nowhere', are also included, with both of which he nearly made it. Disc 2 is comprised almost entirely of the many demos Brook made, fun songs composed by himself with the occasional highlight - including 'A Lover's Question' and 'Looking Back', big hits in the hands of Clyde McPhatter and Nat King Cole. Listening to them now, one just can't help but wish that it could have Brook in both cases who made it with them, for his performances are really compelling. Some super gospel songs have been thrown in for good measure, in which he sounds completely at home with a quartet.

Many of these tracks are the rarest of rare, lots unreleased on compact disc, and certainly never before compiled in such a comprehensive collection as this! The sound does vary on the tracks (e.g. some background noise on some tracks and the occasional 'tinny' track) as the recordings are very old and digital transfers at that, with a lot of demos, but the overall quality is very high. The booklet is pretty informative and substantial for me, with dates of release and songwriters included and a brief career biography of the artist. All in all, Jasmine should be proud! It is only thanks to them that we fans of this wonderful artist have so much of his recordings to treasure, as few labels have released much to shout about. There is nothing on the market of this singer so exhaustive and primarily high standard as Jasmine's three releases. If you are a fan of Brook, I strongly suggest you get them all! And if you are still not satisfied, his brilliant 1970 albums (you know, 'RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA') TODAY and HOME STYLE by Wea Japan are also up on Amazon, with wonderful sound and at very reasonable prices. However, if you just want to enjoy a truly quality singer finding his feet in unconfined and fun surroundings, I strongly recommend that you start here.

Excellent quality with their leatheer outer and lining. Size 9 was good fit - not too narrow as a lot of modern shoes seem to be these days! Good sole underneath with nice grip on smooth surfaces. Highly recommended by my husand.
