Expensive but worth it - distinctly more versatile and controllable than Yamaha.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice styling, not very strong, 23 July 2016
Neatly styled BUT the first time I filled it up and then tried to pick it up, the front locks burst open. I shall keep this box and use it to store a small quantity of specialist tools - for general use I have bought a Stanley Fatmax toolbox - not many ££ more and distinctly chunkier!

Anything by Albert Nicholas is worth listening to - best recording that I know is the double LP "Let Me Tell You". I met AN briefly in London a short time before his death - nice guy, terrific musician.

Three Men And A Baby / Three Men And A Little Lady [DVD]
Three Men And A Baby / Three Men And A Little Lady [DVD]
Dvd ~ Tom Selleck
Price: £4.99

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter sentimental drivel!, 23 Jun. 2016
I'm clearly in a minority of one, but I consider this one the worst films ever made - in fact, it's the only film I have walked out of in the cinema in disgust. A truly moronic parade of sexist cliches - men are all mouth and trousers, they pretend to be clever but are reduced to quivering infantile half-wits as soon as a baby shows up, while women may claim to have brains and be dedicated to careers but will throw all these silly ideas to one side given an opportunity to do some mothering. Given the film's success, who cares what I think, but if I hadn't walked out of the cinema when I did, I would have physically attacked the screen. Utter sentimental drivel!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good - would be perfect if it had an AF/MF switch, 15 Jun. 2016
Optically good, but a problem for me was that this lens has no AF/MF switch - if the AF won't lock onto your subject, you can't take a picture. Eventually I bought a Canon EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 STM lens, which admittedly needs an adapter to work with EOS-M but is better suited to my needs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, 2 May 2016
This review is from: Camelot Special Edition (DVD)
Twee sentimental rubbish - there's a place for escapist entertainment, but this is just bad - I can't engage with it on any level.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bargain!, 30 Mar. 2016
I bought this elsewhere for £30 less. First impression - utterly ridiculous! It should not be possible to produce a saxophone of any kind for this money, let alone one which plays this well straight out of the box. I am an occasional brass player and lapsed clarinet/alto sax man who never held a soprano sax before, and was able to play immediately all over the horn, just having to nurse the right-hand notes in the lower register. Some more practice and experimentation with mouthpieces will certainly fix this. I would genuinely say you would need to spend 10 times the price of this sax to get anything significantly better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Historical interest only!, 27 Mar. 2016

Five stars if you're a film student, but unwatchable as entertainment. It is I suppose good luck that a complete print has been found of a film as old as this, sadly the print is very tired and conveys nothing of the quality of the original photography. The film is of course silent, it has intertitles which seem to have been written by a disapproving Sunday School teacher. The photography is characterised by a totally static camera - we are well before the age of zoom lenses of course, but there is not a single pan or tracking shot, even in chase scenes the horses gallop in from one side of the frame and out the other. There is sparing use of close-ups, not as effective as they might have been due to the wooden acting. NOTE: The DVD is definitely region 1 only, NOT all regions. You'll need a dedicated region 1 player like me!

Take The Money And Run [1968] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Woody Allen

4.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of laughs, 24 Mar. 2016

Early-period Allen, when he was still doing knockabout comedy. This film more than stands the test of time and delivers solid entertainment value.

Ripping Yarns - The Complete Series[DVD] [1976]
Ripping Yarns - The Complete Series[DVD] [1976]
Dvd ~ Michael Palin
Price: £7.52

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality control crashes and burns, 24 Mar. 2016

This set of 9 stories starts moderately well with "Tompkinson's Schooldays", although even here I feel the concept that public school life consists of meaningless farcical ritual was deal with better in "The Meaning Of Life", but after that the humour shrivels and dies. The DVD set is accompanied by a booklet with an 18-page text of quite stupefying tedium, being a catalogue of pitches to commissioning editors, scriptwriting sessions and filming dates, but which is nonetheless worth reading simply to understand how much Palin and Jones had on their plates at the time they did "Ripping Yarns" and how they sadly failed to avoid the trap of spreading themselves too thin and being less than rigorous with their script editing.
